A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat and was for the redistribution of all wealth. She felt deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican which she expressed openly. One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to higher taxes on the rich & the addition of more government welfare programs. Based on the lectures that she had participated in and the occasional chat with a professor she felt that for years her father had obviously harbored an evil, even selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his. The self professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He stopped her and asked her point blank, how she was doing in school. She answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain. That she studied all the time, never had time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because of spending all her time studying. That she was taking a more difficult curriculum. Her father listened and then asked, "How is your good friend Mary doing?" She replied, "Mary is barely getting by." She continued, "She barely has a 2.0 GPA," adding, "and all she takes are easy classes and she never studies." "But Mary is so very popular on campus, college for her is a blast, she goes to all the parties all the time and very often doesn't even show up for classes because she is too hung over." Her father then asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your 4.0 GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0." He continued, "That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA." The daughter visibly shocked by her father's suggestion angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I worked really hard for mine, I did without and Mary has done little or nothing, she played while I worked real hard!" The father slowly smiled, winked and said, "Welcome to the Republican Party!"
At my school, it was the repubs who had the 2.0 average. That's because being rich elite entitled them to not have to work hard. And many of them will never have to either. They will exploit the poor, just like their parents did.
At mine school the republicans are the ones that are preppy and smart. All the hardcore liberals think it's cool to smoke pot and come in stoned.
"But Dad, I did make a new friend. Sally is a real nice girl. She's a lot older than me. Her husband died, so she came back to school to get her degree so she could get a better job. "Its so hard for her. She has to work to afford college. All she ever does is work and study. Sometimes she falls asleep in the library. She works so hard, but only has a 2.0 GPA. I'm so lucky that you are paying for my college and I don't have to work. "I've been thinking that if I tutor her, she could get a 3.0. But that would mean that I would have less time to study for my classes and my 4.0 would go down. "Dad, what do you think I should do?"
arent hippies supposed to be open minded? most people on this forum are ignorant as hell towards people with opposing political views
Being open minded doesn't mean that all viewpoints are equal. Republicans fucking suck, and no amount of open-mindedness is going to change that.
I prefer to keep what I earned too. I'd like to see Bush stop squandering $300 billion of our tax money on his Iraq game. Now does that make me a Republican or a Democrat? For that matter, does that spending of other people's money make GW Bush a Republican or a liberal Democrat? .
It's the exact opposite at mine, the liberals are rich, preppy, and goody-goody nicey-nice. All the stoners are either idependent or not political
When all people really do have equal opportunity then the economic part of republican ideals makes sense. However, the eradication of personal freedom by modern republicans is inexcusable and disgusting. Why do they insist on imposing their beliefs on the entire country? This is why I lean toward the liberal side of things. Liberals tend to speak out for personal freedom, and try to keep things fair for a fairly large group of people who, much as you like to believe they don't exist, do not have the same oppurtunities that other people do.
isnt that pretty stupid to generalize all republicans like that? if all people are created equal, then opinions should be created equal too, ass
they should call this forum the 'liberal' forum instead of the politics forum. a key element in politics is opposing viewpoints of issues. here, people with opposing viewpoints get chastized
And in the public domain and on mainstream media those opposing the current right wing populism get labelled anything from "lovers of terrorists" to "anti-American traitors". Isn't about time these hyper nationalistic sheep got some chastisement for their defense of the ruination of our country and its quite Liberal founding precepts?
Stop the "republicans fucking suck" bullshit. Not all of them do, and a lot of Democrats suck as well. People in general suck, don't limit yourself to republicans Anyways, the point here is this. As MikeE posted in his little addendum to the story, most people who get that redistribution ACTUALLY NEED IT. Sure, there's always going to be some blood suckers. But then, that's what those rich fucks are anyways. They talk about being self made, but it takes A LOT of people to make one man rich. Then he acts like he did it himself! Exploitation reigns supreme in the world of the rich, that's how they got to be rich. To an extent it's alright, but there comes a point where you have to look around and say "Well, I certainly have enough to be secure, in fact, I have enough, and then some. I should give some of this to people who struggle to just get by". If they won't do it voluntarily, then it should be forced. By the way, Republicans used to be about each person keeping what they gain for themselves (donating to charitable causes, hopefully, but not taxed away). That was the true conservative stance, and I do have my sympathies for it. But, today's Republican party has moved far away from true conservatism, and what they stand for (fascism, basically, or plutocracy), is something I have no sympathy for.
