saying 'good virus protection' for windows is like saying 'you will never get sick or die'. too bad it will happen someday
I never use the free ones but someone pointed out a free AV called nod32 a while back that I never got round to checking out but it had some good reviews but you may be better off using trial versions of premium software like f-prot and Bit Defender till you get something better - Personally I use a lot of linux stuff to scrub my data before it gets to the windows boxes even on my home networks
I like ClamAV myself but I will be checking out some others. Saves me time. That way I just click scan on the files most likely to be infected but I use to use AVG on my Windows box. It caught a lot. So far so good on all my Linux boxes. No viruses found. That is either cuz they are clean or I need a new virus scanner. Peace, Cricket
Some Folks have been having difficulties finding AVG Free since Grisoft's site revamp. Currently they're here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 links to http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 AVG catches more (with less false positives) than most $$$ AVs in the retailers...
I have been using AVG for about a year now. A couple of weeks ago I got a some messages saying that AVG would no longer be free in 2007. Now, I also have a few other free anti virus programs. And some of these programs have caught stuff that AVG did not. One of them is called Avira AntiVir. It is very good. Also, the one I like the best is called Spyware Terminator. It is a combination free Spyware and Anti Virus program.
Avast! also makes a very good free antivirus program, although I think AVG is probably easier to use.
Who were the messages from? The only thing I've seen from Grisoft (AVG) is they won't support an older version of AVG Free after mid Jan 2007. There is a new version to replace the older one. The links I posted (above) are for the new (v7.5)...
Hi Guys and Gals, I've used AVG for a year now and my subscription ends in February. I'm not sure what that guy in the previous page was talking about with "lasting forever". Sounds like inaccurate information to me. Or I'm out of the loop? Let me know. Yesterday, I came up with a disturbing "Threat Detected". It said I had "Trojan horse Generic2.LNI". I googled this to find more information and it ended up being a false positive. I did as I was told, and emptied out my Windows System Restore points - the file was deleted with it (it was stored in there). According to AVG, files stored in the Restore cannot be accessed by the user or the AVG program. Hence AVG could not automatically put it in the Vault for me. I had to manually delete by deleting Restore points. I apparently fixed the problem as AVG was then able to quarantine it and I deleted the file in my Vault. What I'm wondering is - has this happened to anyone recently? Meaning the "false positive" with "Trojan horse Generic2.LNI" or other such scares. I'm curious and want to know more about this. How can I prevent these "scares"? How can I identify them as scares and not a real shitty thing?
i booted up my Windows system today... one of the first things it said was: UNEXPECTED ERROR: MISSING CODE PAGE OR BLAH BLAH BLAH SOMETHING HEXIDECIMALS.
Aha. Ok, I must have mis-read what I saw. The way it was worded, I figured they were getting rid of the free version all together. So, does this mean I should delete the old version and upload the new version?
