I recently bought a real nice wooden and hemp beaded neclace, with a sharks tooth in the centre. I loved it. Its brill. But then when I got home I started to think. Could a shark have been harmed for its tooth? Was this tooth taken from a shark that had been hunted? I felt/am feeling guilty. Does anyone here know whether it is likely that a shark was harmed? Or am I just being silly lol. Maybe sharks teeth can be found, I don't know. Anyway, please tell me what you think.

heya! So far's I've seen all sharks teeth sold are off sharks that have been hunted/caught anyway. You'd be amazed just how many people fish for sharks, not only is the fight a "thrill" but thay can get good prices for the meat too, obviously this is mostly illegal. I know that sharks teeth do fall out/break etc, so hopefully yours was found, but I'm sorry to say it was probably off a hunted shark. Don't feel too guilty though yeah? Honour the animal instead when you wear it and think what an incredible creature it is!

Well I did buy it from a Natural Trust shop, i doubt they would sell anything that would have harmed an animal, would they? hmmm I don't know *shrugs*.

Where do you see that fishing for sharks is illegal? As far as I know it's perfectly legal to angle for most species of shark, certainly all the species in British waters.

it isnt cruel... Geez you people think EVERYTHING is cruel..

ignorance is a bliss i guess.. o well..

Sharks naturally shed their teeth yearly, so they wash up on shore... it isnt harmful to the shark at all, they grow back their missing teeth...

haha ok.. just making sure that you all know how they make the necklaces.. it is cruel free ;). back in the day people would kill sharks for their jaws and meat, that is now illegal.. although some people still do it... shame on them. may they meet their maker with guilt ridden faces.

I don't see what's wrong with fishing for sharks... How is it any worse than fishing for fish? Or are you against fishing too?

Im against the killing of any animal for the use of 'fashion'. Im also a vegetarian, and the killing of animals for meat, also seems cruel to me. However, if an animal has to be killed for its meat, i believe that its better not to waste any of it.

Killing sharks for meat and jaws is the same thing as poaching baby seals for there fur coats, or shooting elephents for there tusks. Its wrong, and unnecessary.

Fish are a different story. Theres trillions of them, and many places on earth depend on them for food (the philippines, for example). The Native Americans, probably one of the cultures most intwine with animals, mostly depended on animals for there diet, but it worked out fine. A single buffalo could feed a tribe for a few days. It was only when western man came into the picture that they were driven nearly to extinction.

Beleg, you speak a lot of sense. Not only did the Native Americans kill buffalo in a sustainable way, but they didn't waste any part of it.
