I read in a wicca book that it's important to abstain from alcohol and those kind of drugs, that they poison the sould for lack of a better phrase....

It's a difficult thing to do in Ireland lads! :D Well, obviously if I wanted to I easily could. Does it take away from any spells or would it just work as bad 'karma' for me?

Once I'm given the freedom to pursue Wicca (when I get a house: I'm in a christian family) I will choose what to do, and if it seems I really should abstain I may well.... It's just the society where it's the thing to do.

I wouldn't listen to a wiccan book any more than a christian book.

Though there's an argument that it makes you less pure while there are their toxins in you, and you feel that when you're drinking if you get me.... Is there any basis to this?

I must say I've never heard this one before. It does sound a bit Silver Ravenwolf-y to me. In terms of whether you should or shouldn't do it, just take a look at it from the standpoint of the Rede. If you go out binge drinking every night, you're obviously harming yourself and eventually your liver will stop doing it's thing. You're also endangering others if you drive drunk too. But like anything, if you do it in moderation and you're responsible about it, I don't see how it's harming anyone. Just do what you think is best. It's all relative anyhow.

I was reading this book called "Exiles Return" or something like that (By Feist). In it, one of the names of the 5 major Gods (all part of (or aspects of )the Godhead, which is basically the xian God) is "The Abstainer".

This guy (former Duke of Olasko) talkin' to Kalkin (the avatar of the God of luck/thieves Banath) asked, "what does the abstainer do, nothing?" Kalkin said "No, he abstains."

I can see why a spell done while you're blind drunk probably won't work too well. Honestly though surely we're intelligent to apply some good sense to the matter.

    Totally agree with Roses :)

Anyway what about in 'ye olde days' when everyone, witches or otherwise, drank beer because it was either than or filthy contiminated water. Never heard of them having not managed to go about their daily business (not that they were wiccans).

Not much of a drinker myself, but am a great advocate of 'the middle way' in these issues. Neither excess nor abstinence.

isn't moderate, intelligent use of alcohol & other consciousness-altering substances one of the 8 paths of magick according to gardner & contemporary traditionalist witchcraft? not the ONLY path, of course, if you have a problem with codependency/addiction then obviously it's the wrong path for you, but it is a legitimate path. i often take one glass of red wine before meditation.

No indeed, Absinthe is not a drug. It is a concoction of alcohol that contains wormwood, a natural substance used regularly in Wicca.

Some would call the mild psychotropic effects of the wormwood a drug, but it is not. More of an enhancer for the alcohol since use of the wormwood alone has no effect on the state of mind.

PS- Hi Kitty, wanna grab a drink? ;)

Oh I see *feels a bit dumb*

All I really know about drugs is from those stupid talks they gave at school, about how all drugs are bad, blah blah etc.

Learn something new every day huh? :)
    Thanks for that.

If you have a magical experience while under the influence of alcohol or another substance, it's easy to wonder if it's the result of that substance or if something else is going on. I think it's just easier to do things and learn from them when you're not using.
