I'm vegan now, by accident. Yup. Totally vegan. I can barely believe it myself, LOL Actually what happened was I started getting really sick again (vestibular disorder) and a long time ago a gluten-free diet seemed to help it. So I decided to do it again, but this time eliminating all the other stuff that messes me up as well. (refined sugars, fruit, caffeine, etc, meat) this left me vegetarian for a week. I was still eating eggs, milk, cheese... etc. I've never done well with dairy and eggs but I didn't want to cold-turkey EVERYTHING. However they were still making me sick, so out the window those went too. In an effort to insure my diet is still well-balanced despite elimination of nearly everything I existed on before, I've discovered a lot of new easy ways to eat vegan and it's been easy to do it - brown rice, dry beans cooked, frozen veggies (heated and mixed with rice), tofu, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, soy milk, red potatoes baked with olive oil and herbs, and so on. I'm still discovering ways to vary things up without having to spend 2 hours cooking some complicated vegan dish. But it's working out so far. Once a week I get tater tots from a local restaurant that uses vegetable oil for frying, as a treat. I wasn't consciously trying to achieve being a vegan. It just happened as a result of trying to be healthier because my body is a piece of crap. But I like it, and so far am starting to feel better. I just finished week 3 as a vegan . I think I am experiencing either withdrawal or detox or something from all the crap I ate before, so it's probably going to take another month or two before I REALLY start feeling better, ya think? Anyone help me out on this one? Because although I feel better, at the same time I feel even crappier. Towards the end of the first week and for part of the second week I had the WORST headache EVER constantly, felt extremely weak and had weird poop. That has kinda gotten better but it's still residual. The last few days I have been feeling sick... but I don't have anything and oddly, I can't describe HOW I feel sick, I just do. Is it possible to experience detox if you go cold turkey from eating EVERYTHING to being completely vegan, but still eat a lot? Or is this withdrawal? Any light anyone can shed would be helpful. Thanks!
the macrobiotic folks all claim that we do detox, esp from prepared foods. (I get no-caffeine headaches if I mess up and have more than a tea/soda or two in a week). Any diet change changes your chemical balamnce. if you still feel grotty in a few weeks, contact a registered dietictian, who is veg-friendly. If dodson's is still open, I'd start asking there because they are a heath food store because of helath, not politics. That said, Kate Haas at the Earth in Norman is a good source. Tell her you know Tie Dye Paul's wife robyn (they never remember just robyn...and we are all fine, thanks)
