Okay, I know there are a bunch of storage threads out there, including from other forums. Here's a point, though, that I've seen brought up but haven't seen a discussion pick up from it. If you store blotter hits together can the acid from one hit transfer to the other? In my situation, I received 10 hits in cellophane wrap from a cigarette pack and the hits are all over each other, not to mention that I also made my best to fit that into a film canister, so I had to push it in. (I folded the end of the wrap that the hits weren't occupying to fit it in, and the side with the hits went in first.) Sorry for so much detail, but I've been stressing out the past night on how to best store long-term for several months. And I also wrapped the canister in foil and a couple of plastic bags and put it in a dark, dry cabinet. My biggest concern, though, is the hits being too tightly packed because otherwise things look perfect.
A-OK i do not believe the acid will transfer from one hit to another. especially if they are from the same sheet. the conc. of acid in the paper is the same on both hits, so there is nothing to make it want to move. if one hit had like 50X more acid on it, it might naturally "flow" to the weaker hit, to balance it out. but i even doubt that.
Thanks for the responses. That actually makes sense. This is just my first time ever coming into contact with acid and after getting it I pretty soon felt thrust into the whole storage deal and didn't really know what to do or if I was doing it right. And they're not being pressed onto each other, either. There's pressure on the wrap from the side the hits aren't occupying, but I did my best to make sure the hits themselves aren't getting pressed on. They're just lying all together on the bottom edge.
They will be fine stored like that for atleast 6months, I would bet it would be still 90% there after 2 years but thats just me The sensitivity is greatly exagerated. Just dont take it out/touch it unnessecarily.
you could press them together all you want. the acid isn't going to transfer from one hit to the other. trust it. you are storing them properly. enemies are heat, light, oxygen and moisture. i keep mine in an amber colored pill bottle (blocks light) that also has some desiccant packs (to absorb moisture) , in a mason jar (airtight), in the fridge (to protect from heat). might be overkill, but i think that's the BEST way you can store it. you're really only protecting from light and extreme temp. it could be colder and AIRTIGHT
Sorry, but I don't have access to the fridge for this. The metal cabinet I keep it in does feel cool to the touch, though. Also don't have any bottles that I could use, so that's why I used a black film canister. And it seals pretty airtight. Before wrapping the whole thing in foil, I actually put a layer of foil between the lid and the rest of the inside while closing it, so another plus!
I was actually taking some vitamin pills today and noticed the expiration dates lasting at least over a year, and the instructions say to store in a cool, dry place. This got me thinking about acid storage, and while it may be more delicate, I have less doubt now that what I have can last at least just as long. The thing is that I'm sure I'll need more than several months to use up all of it. (Of course, though, not over a year.) In several months is when I first plan to take it.
