Weeeeal! I was having fun in download.com doing their on-line classes to speed up my machine when I got to the lesson where they say to shut down certain un-needed services in administrative tools. well I disable them and when I restart my laptop it's a touch fucked up. I've no start menu or task bar I can't move files and I can't change it back to the way it was! I can get to the services window in administrative tools but I can't access the extended menu only the standard one and while I can right click on the individual services and bring up the properties and it does look available, not grayed out when I click it nothing happens, also I have no restore points. any advice? aside from not being so dumb, buying a new pc, giving up and returning to paper and pencil, and reinstalling xp cos I don't have the disk. Please!!!!
One time I had a virus on a Windows XP 64 bit machine. My virus scan said I needed to reboot to clean it. My options were to restart, or cancel. Of coarse, the cancel button was greyed out where I couldn't choose it. The only thing left to do was restart it. Upon restarting, I logged in. Next thing I notice is that my theme was deleted. I couldn't see anything on the screen, such as text, windows, buttons, Start. It was fubar. Well I just dropped it and eventually re-installed it at a later date. I only use Windows once every few blue moons. But I can't seem to think of, or remember, what I ever use it for.
I keep system restore turned off. In the event of an infection, I can nail it with one shot. Go through Blackviper's list, see if there is anything you missed. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm x
Negative. I play games that are native to Linux, like UT3, Tremulous, etc. I also play Windows only games on Wine, such as CS. If a game doesn't work in either of the above methods, I won't play it. Plain and simple, if a gaming company wants my money, they better make a game that runs on Linux. Honestly, it is getting hard to find games that don't run on Linux.
if you cant find it on your expanded menu then try restore from command prompt (if using XP) also this is a killer site for assistance: http://theeldergeek.com/
1-start it in safe mode (i think it is f-8 or f-2 key during first few seconds of startup). 2-run msconfig (start menu and run). 3-you can choose what services start when computer starts
wine about your problem, you're going to need a windows xp install disk, give me an email and i will "NOT" send you one, thus "NOT" saving you tons of money. briscoe727@gmail.com but try that first. it should work unless you can't figure out msconfig.
