I would contend that there was never a Jesus of Nazareth. I'm not positive but theres credible research to back up my claims. Or rather, theres no historical evidence to back up the contrary jesus was alive viewpoint. I would assume the burden of proof is on the people who claim as such
well shit. all we have is josephus. still, i have a hard time believing that something so huge came from nothing.
I believe it was a compilation of myths that evolved through several centuries like all mythologies do. Not nothing, simply several cultures shared beliefs evolving.
I think the burden of proof lies squarely on you here. The historical texts that I'm talking about span time and location and are not of one source. Popular opinion holds that Jesus existed in many different forms. It is far from the norm to think that he wasn't, at the very least, an actual person. The fact that you're saying you have credible research kind of peaks my interest as I've not come across it. Please share!
can't help it. i'm epically ruthless on most topics. but this one is too big. there's also this amazing book called jesus in history. it's pretty simple. he was just one of many who took. whatever that means, there were loads of "messiahs" running around. this one guy just took. it makes sense in terms of human psychology. honestly, we go long enough, JFK is going to be a myth. most myths have some place the mental workings of society at large. eventually, they all end up a myth. depending on what people want/need. i appreciate that. son of god? pfft. not the point. but he likely got put there for a reason, political or otherwise.
you want to come home to a hug, a pot roast, a foot rub and some affection, dontcha? i do it very well. i can practically hear that tired throat rumble that makes me melt and bring you beer.
sure, but mythology aside, that doesn't mean that "jesus" didn't exist as a human being. whatever social/emotional/religious needs people put on him, it doesn't mean that that one particular guy didn't exist.
It's specious. I'm not saying that he didn't exist. I'm saying that being certain that a religious figure existed because you live in a society where the religion is prevalent isn't coherent historical information. I'm not convinced that there was never a dude attributed as jesus. I'm just saying the authenticity of the 'historical' documents is plagued with fraud. It's all just a guess, and mine is that there probably wasnt one specific guy who had all those myths attributed to him. There were several.
His final solution to the jewish question although ghastly was certainly audacious. what to do with 11 million jews in europe? If he had a few more years he might have pulled it off https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkseQ6iq14c&feature=related Hotwater
Too late. If I hadn't already made the Jesus thread I would've conceded the point and saved the effort.
Not entirely sure if you're comparing (or collating) the myth of spartacus to the myth of jesus, saying that spartacus was jesus, or saying that spartacus was one of the most impressive world leaders ever to exist.
