So, I'm out with a few friends tonight, and we stop at this woman's house to get some pot from her boyfriend She's had her dreads for maybe a year or so, so she sees my shorties and immediately knows what I'm doing, instant connection. There's a big section at the top of my head that i'm contemplating splitting into two smaller dreads, but i was washing a little vigorously this weekend and it flared out a bit. when I tell her this, she looks at me like i'm a mad man and says "You aren't supposed to let water touch your hair for at least 3 months!" Personally, I was devastated by the statement. How someone could go that long without even wetting their head is a conundrum to me. I try to explain to her that the washing helped my hair in general, but she wasn't hearing it. Then she 'humbly' informed me that i MUST twist my sections and apply Shea Butter to them or they will never dread. Blasphemy I say!! Because I didn't want to argue, I just let her continue her speech until she felt she was done. I do appreciate her TRYING to lend me some advice from her experience, but to come across as if you're ordering me to follow your method or suffer a hell of non-dreading hair, that's just wrong. Actually upset me a bit for about 5 minutes. Okay, I'm done, just wanted to rant a little...
Yea thats complete Bs People like that are completely unimformed on dreads. First there is no need for that nasty sheabutter she was unimformed by someone that probably told her that. (some one told me that 2 and i ruined my hair with my first set) And yes washing is a definite yes you should wash you hair. You hair doesnt lock up good when its all greasy and nasty it doesnt knot up good at all. thats it. you need to point her here. So she can know the truth. LOl i remember when they told me to use shea butter but it was a wax sheabutter and i litterally caked my hair like massive ammounts on a dread lol funny. Did she have the natural sheabutter or the wax one.
ya in school people insist on telling me the same kinda crap too, except they dont have dreads so i just tune them out and watch their lips move. my personal favorite is when they tell me hair wont lock if i wash or dont use wax because if u tell them otherwise they swear up and down that im wrong, as u may have noticed.
Lol i like the one where they say "When are your dreads gonna be done" lol makes me laugh and say never. Or if my hairs real I just tell them no. But about that shea butter, I met this rasta in austin texas and he told me that its good for conditioning the dreads and he uses it himself and his dreads were killer so i dunno. Its natural and im pretty sure it washes right out so i dunno might wanna give it a shot? Dont bite my head off im just saying its better than wax
lol yeah i never said it was complete BS, but she was trying to tell me that my hair simply WILL NOT dread unless i use shea butter, which is of course untrue. personally, i'd leave it alone simply because i dont like heavy products in my hair like that. i'm sure it has some pluses in its use but personally i'm gonna stay away from it
Steps to make dreads: 1. Throw away combs/brushes. 2. Wash hair with residue free product as needed. 3. Wait.
haha for real! i say the same thing. or they say, "why don't your dreads look like *so and so's*?" uh, because i'm white? and my hair is white-person hair and takes forever to dread? people...
yo honestly, if people are willing to forsake basic hygiene and smell like **** for a hairstyle that seems a bit popular nowadays...then there isn't anything you can say to them. a lot of those people end up cutting their "locs" off after a few years because they miss "styling" or because their heads got so nasty because they put too much crap in it or they overtwisted/made them too small to "look presentable."
I was mis informed with my first set of dreads, altho I was told to use pure bees wax, the realy hard stuff you had to melt with a little heat and rub it in WTF was i thinking ?? my hair was like a frigin candle !!!! 5 years wasted then I got lice and chopped them off & started again NATURALLY no crap, wax or junk. These companies should be made to stop selling wax and ruining people dreads
I was at a wiccan store the other day, looking for runes, and the woman at the shop started telling me about my dreads and how they were bad. well, first she said that my hair looked so natty i must be scared to take a brush to it. so i told they were dreadlocks, and she started preaching about how her black friend says that white people can't have dreads because they have the wrong kind of hair...? i was like...uhm...i have dreads, so okay... then she told me how she knows white people who had dreads and they got bald spots, and that when you try to wash them they never get clean. that wouldn't even be so bad, but it's just that people tell you this like it's fact, and the one with the dreads has no idea what they're doing.
^^ Yeah thats ridiculous, but it just shows how the ignorance sprouts. her "black friend" told her something that wasn't true, and now she swears by it. I dont know if i'd be able to go back to that store
a few days after I got my first set I was in a pub and this really old cyber goth with synth dreads, came up to got hold of one of my dreads and said something along the lines of: "No No No!! These are so wrong. Are they real? They look shit, You should get Synth! You can take them out and they'll last for EVER. If you take out your dreads I will make you a Synth pair for FREE!" Then she started trying to unravel one! I can't remember what I did though on account of I was just too stunned, I'd rather un dreaded people kept their opinions to themselves.
