I can't believe there is even a section for it here.I guess a few people still watch it.I certainly do not.--So called 'reality tv' is tv at its most juvenile and stupid form. Also there is nothing real about it.It's contrived nonsense, fixed and caters to the lowest common denominator of viewer.Maybe a few people view it,but really all these types of shows should be taken off the airwaves. They are an insult to people that enjoy quality television.--On the other hand since they seem to have forgotten how to make quality tv shows for quite some time now, maybe this outright rubbish,'(un)reality shows' is all they are capable of making nowadays for the most part.

it's unfortunate but not too surpriseing.i think tv execs and many others in that industry want shows that are going to sell. i'm beginning to wonder how long reality shows will remain popular.maybe FOREVER.seems like it.

hey, as long as people will keep watching, they'll keep making them . .

it sucks, yeah, but they get ratings.

I question how accurate the ratings systems are nowadays.I don't think many people actually view this junk.---The Nielson ratings 'used' to be very good, but that was back when there were far fewer channels.--Now I do not think any of the ratings systems relfect the 'real' numbers of actual viewers--which in the case of (un)reality shows would be very low.---Speaking of Nielson ratings, they actually called me recently asking if I wanted to participate, and the second after I told them I no longer view US network tv or the 24 hour(news??) stations,I never heard from them again even though I still view other tv stations.

The reason why there are so many reality television shows is because they're so much cheaper to make.

And I confess, I watch several reality television shows.

Why does it matter how "real" reality tv is? I know they work some tv magic, but I don't give a shit. They're no different from any other show.

??? the difference is pretty obvious. It's supposed to be real, cause it's labeled as reality television.

Any other show doesn't claim it's unscripted and real

I was in an elevator in this hotel in Orlando with a friend once, going up to my room... and suddenly the entire cast of some Real World come into the elevator... with cameras and all. Me and my friend are talking, and the camera guys tell us to "shut up" because they're filming. We told them to "fuck off" and kept on talking.

Strangers in elevators are just a part of the real world that the cast of the "Real World" will have to deal with.

good !you were lucky to be in that elevator. i know i and most of us would have loved to have at your opportunity to tell the camera guy to fuck off.in case he is on these forums i'll say it too.fuck off camera guy.....another thing i've noticed on the tube is when someone is talking trying to sound smart or cool they're often not looking into the camera .they're talking to a producer or director or whoever the hell it is.i don't mind of course .who wants to make eye contact with me but it's just something i've noticed.

How real they are is really not the point.Even if those shows were as real as they possibly could be--they'd still be junk.--But again nothing real about them.---For example American Idol 'admitted' a few years ago that alot of the show is fixed.---I guess some people still view them, but alot of people do not. These shows are definitely one of the reasons tv viewership is at an all time low in numbers.

I have an idea. Since they just do not have the talent to produce good, quality tv anymore. Instead of airing these so-called reality shows, why not re-run alot of the GREAT tv shows that they used to make from back in the days when they really knew how to produce great television.--It would be cheaper too,and there are so many great older tv shows that have not been seen for years on tv.--

"Reality" is just a genre of shows like any other. True, they vary in the degree of how real they are, but everyone knows how fake most of them are anyway.

Compare it to pro wrestling. WWE shows are among the most watched every week and everyone knows it's not real, but they would never come out and call it "fake fighting with drama" or something because the illusion of reality is much more interesting. It's just another medium to get a story across.

And besides, there are some true reality shows. Cops for example.

I can understand how the claims of reality would ruffle some feathers, but it's just business.

I agree that how real it is isn't important, but that seems to be a common argument against it....But I disagree that it is all junk. While most of them are junk, alot of them are better than some of the lame sitcoms and dramas on tv. I'd rather watch Real World or Cops or SWAT or DEA over, say, Still Standing, Surviving Suburia, The Goode Family, Til Death, or Bones any day.

I know what you mean... thing is, reality TV is supposed to be just that... Reality. . . What sucks about it is the fact that so much of it is scripted nowadays. Had it not been scripted, it might not be as "entertaining" as it is now, but at least it would be real.

WWE doesn't claim it's real and I highly doubt people consider the crap that goes on during the "fights" are real... It is what it is: Sports Entertainment. While the fights, the drama, etc. aren't real, they still must be extremely skilled and be physically fit to pull off the stunts they pull. I wouldn't put WWE in the same category as reality TV

Most reality shows lose any edge after a couple of series. It's become the 21st century replacement for mini-series and it's cheap tv funded by voting.
