It seems like Britain is so stuck-fast to America's butt, that we have become as common as a pair of underpants. Surely this is potentially wrong? When I see how much America influence Britain, our government and our very lifestyle. It doesn't seem too difficult to point the finger at America's unrelenting powers. I look back to the day when America were vulnerable...atlast. Many agree that it was a tragedy that we will never forget. I now am starting to believe that 9/11 was simply America's chickens coming home to roost. America created Vietnam, they slaughtered innocent people. They built the Horishima atomic bomb and yet, not one American batted an eyelid as a vast expanse of populated land was obliterated. Imagine like now, and someone dropped a nuclear or atomic bomb on your Town. YOu would not die quickly, but agonisingly and slowly. I don't condone terrorism. But perhaps America had it coming. THis thread is simply looking at the relationship between America and Britain. Whether we can survive without America as an allie. Or whether we are stronger without. Closer than close? Is this what Britain needs with America?
Well i have to say, there are alot of american jokes going around.... If brits take the piss outta america we can't be that close... surely..
Britain is bisotted with George Bush and the whole American flag thing. I even spotted an Englishman with a Star spangled banner tattooed across his arms. So much for britishness. As before, America will yet be attacked, but it won't be under bushes watch. It will be under Obama's watch. Newspapers will start making new jokes like: Osama Obama. Yet Britain, like a cute little kitten, will curl its body around the foot of America for milk.
hey guyz i have this graet idea since us and uk are so close why don't we put the american and uk forums together?
Just because nobody likes my idea doesn't mean it's a bad idea. Look at Einstein, everybody thought his ideas were bad and now he's considered a genius. Which means, by that association, I am genius too!
See, the UK and America are connected down to the last drop in history. Why does America have so many of the same place names as us?
The reason America, like our Cousin Australia have place names the same as us. Is because they copied us because they couldn't be original. If Copywrite laws existed for Countries, America and Australia(Even Canada), would be penniless. A day in court, but without dancing on the roof of some four by four vehicle. In Canada, there is an Uxbridge. In America(North America), there is a Dover, Portsmouth, Oxford, Cambridge, California,London(This includes the Thames River), Boston, Carlisle, Kent, Hastings, Brighton. These are but a few. Australia: Lewisham, Sydenham, Petersham(Petersham is in Kent UK, next to Flaversham, which has a nice pub overlooking pastures that have wheatshiefs and cattle), Rochester, Birmingham, Chester. They even copied the Newcastle arch bridge for their Sydney harbour bridge. America are closer than bark on a tree. No wonder, when you go to London, there is a Sports bar which hosts genuine electric American sports straight from Fox's mouth. I believe also that our obesity problem is all because of the American influence. Too many donuts with chocolate frostings, beer aplenty, these things called Bagels.(Actually Bagels are Jewish.). There is even a place in Brockley, that serve an 18 inch pizza. No doub that in America, you get 21 inch pizzas.
"copied us because they couldn't be original", dear god they were us, the new places of settlement were named after home with respect and to enable them to feel more comfortable in their new environment look around plymouth sound in the states and you will find lots of names from the south west because a large proportion of the first migrants were from devon and cornwall
We our you and you are us, we sprang from English roots and there is no getting around that, we have been close forever, but we do not agree all of the time, but when we do it is for all the right reasons, we do not lead England around by the nose by any means. and yes put the forums together, we are very much alike. Peace
I have noticed a marked shift in britains relationship with america over the past few years.britain seems to be deliberately distancing itself from america.i was getting curious as to why, then i noticed everyone in the media talking about china, and how china are soon to become the dominant super power.it explained to my mind, why the british government would drop american meeting appointments,in order to rush to a small conference in china.
Thanks for the tip, that's just one stop away from where I work. One of those pizzas would feed a whole class of my students.
All this "we are them and they are you and us and them" talk...oh my lordy Itd be laughable if it wasnt so weird. Everyone knows years and years and years ago people migrated from the UK over to the states...woopee. People have been moving for centuries and continue to move. Why make it into a massive identity issue when it clearly is no such thing? Im as much connected and unconnected to someone currently breathing from American land than someone breathing from, say, Spanish land. I dont give a smeg. Who bloody does?
