American soldier tells all

Today, on CBCNEWS Sunday, a former American soldier was interviewed about how American soldiers treat Iraqi civilians. He pretty much spilt the beans about what goes on over there. He talked about how they conduct raids of innocent people's houses looking for insurgents. He said they come in, completely ransack the whole house, break things, steal money, and any male who is over 5 feet tall, they take for interrogation. He said he became sick of it because of how time after time, failing to find insurgents, he would have to look at the terrified faces of the women and children whose husbands, sons, fathers, and brothers were taken from them. They would even take things if they thought they were worth some money.

He says that as soon as you are enlisted in the army and sent over to Iraq, you are brainwashed to think that all Iraqis - not just soldiers or politicians - are terrorists. Same goes for anyone who is Muslim.

He said he witnessed American soldiers playing soccer with the heads of Iraqi soldiers.

He tells us that these stories are not just those told about a few bad apples. Lucky if there's a few good apples in the lot.

He's trying to gain Canadian citizenship and is afraid of going back to the US for fear of being put to death by firing squad.

 

I wish one of the US news agencies would pick up the story. I'd be interested in seeing it firsthand.

Are you being serious? That's what the guy said. It does sound rather surreal, but hey - there's not a lot that surprises me anymore.

I didn't say that - I just said it wouldn't be surprising... and that's not a comment about Americans in particular, it's about the psychology of the military no matter what nation they come from.

Its not really a comment about anything but nothing would surprise me so it must be true. Wow, if you join the military all of the sudden you love to kill babies and play games with body parts, sounds about right.

Yeah, that's the problem with these "war-mongering", Neo-Cons.

They like to talk shit about spreading "freedom" and "democracy" when deep inside they know that they're just a bunch of lying, conniving, bunch of "war whores".

I think, that anyone here on this board who is strongly pro-war should sign-up and take the next plane to Iraq, instead of wasting their time posting on a hippie board.

 

If you are talking about me, I have already done a year and that was at the end of a 10 year career. I think you may want to re-examine who it is that sits at home bitching about what they truely know nothing about.

 

Responding to the first post that is just interesting (and horrifying) to hear. I really do believe that they are brainwashed into thinking that all Iraq people are terrorists and I guess not to be compassionate. I'm not saying it necessarily makes them bad people because there are plenty who are good people and who can come back and be compassionate and look at human beings as fellow human beings. But when you're fighting a war you have to be brainwashed into not seeing those people as human beings, otherwise would they kill them and do those things to them? No. I had a friend who was in the marines, and when he would come home he had definitely changed, he was more angry and kind of an asshole. But he's been out for like a year or so and he seems back to normal and its awesome.

But anyway. Sorry to go off on tangents. I'm glad that guy told what he witnessed, if its true anyway, I could believe it though, definitely.

 

Well, whaddayaknow, we got a ex-soldier just got off from Iraq after 1 tour of duty and he thinks, he already knows everything. Hmm.

Thanks, but no thanks, for having participated in and been more directly involved in the deaths and suffering of more than 100,000 Iraqis and 3000+ Americans. How many babies did you kill?

Back in the day, we used to spit at guys like you.

 

Just to bring the level of discourse down a bit. My friends and I never spit on Vietnam vets. In fact many returning vets became close friends of ours during our college years, and joined us in anti-war protests. I would hate to see things disintegrate to the point where we start labeling all military as baby killers.

There will always be a portion of young people when exposed to the vagaries of combat that will be reduced to their lowest common denominator psychologically. That is the nature of war.

And a good reason to counsel your children to think before enlisting. The flag waving and hero worship should be tempered with the knowledge that war doesn't bring out the best in humans. And full medical and psychological support should be made available free of charge and readily accessible to all returning veterans.

 

All that I see don't ya know, them damn babies always getting in the way.

No, but really for the intelligent ones out there, your military does not slaughter and hang children in the streets nor do they kick around peoples head while giving each other high fives. There is of coarse killing going on during a war, but soldiers are not monsters. Believe what you will though.
