have yany of you ever served in americorps? it's like the domestic peace corps, you dont have to have a degree or even a high school diploma to serve... i think i'm going to take a year off from school and serve in americorps instead... i just feel lost, i want to expand my worldview and help people with direct action... all i do is sit on my ass and smoke pot and do schoolwork, i feel so useless.... but i'm looking for some real-life experiences from someone who's served. anyone?

hmm...i believe that americorps is involved in many, many programs. i see em listed all the time. i'm currently in a program to be a teacher; i get a masters and americorps helps fund this program, so the cost is 1/3 the typical price. we work in shady neighborhoods, that's the catch. my neighborhood ain't that shady.
so, i do have a good opinion of americorps currently. however, from the small amount of research i've done, i've noticed that they pay really little for some hard work. this is not meant to dissuade you; if you are financially secure, it sounds great. they pay for your room and/or board? that'd be a plus. i suppose that, as you look for these kinda tasks, opportunities just appear, but i know that there are other options for you at all. have you thought about going abroad? i can let you know about some cool service programs i've found abroad, esp. ones that don't cost much at all. that's what i'll be starting my next year off with.
    hmm...
