An Athiest's Prayer

It's taken me my whole life to assimilate this:

What bothers me about Christianity is that its dogma is focused on worshipping the death of a man who, according to the legend, did so many great and meaningful things in life. I don't see any of the sins he supposedly died for any less perpetuated or any more absolved today than in his own time; and I don't see any of the church leaders who profess to live by his creed giving away their riches to live among the poor -- whose collective donations enriched them in the first place.

Yet I have seen people of all creeds and no creed follow the example of people like Jesus in everyday life. I have even seen con artists and thieves act out of character and do a kind deed; as much to their surprise as my own, in some cases.

Life is worth living if only to view these seeming anomalies with a smile on my face and wonder in my heart, that I might think: maybe there is still hope that humanity will stop worshipping the messenger, and get the message.

 

i wonder , since you get the message , why be athiest ? i spose
it could mean you have no belief in identity , and then , why not
logically just not say so ?

I've never met a godhead that didn't think you have to die to get to heaven. Until that changes, I'm automatically cast as an atheist.

Atheists are useless at praying! We're very good at hoping though, and while we're good at being atheists, we're even better at being ourselves.

 

I liked the last part about getting the message. I had this intense spurt of spirituality when I was younger and I studied the new testament for hours ever night. Oddly enough this is the same time that I really moved away from Christianity and realized I didn't believe in God, at least not how God is depicted in most religions. I just realized while reading the teachings of Jesus that most Christians completely miss the point. I don't think Jesus ever intended to start a dogmatic religion. I don't think he wanted to be worshipped. I just think he wanted people to realize that love is the only salvation for mankind.

 

I am with tikoo and you too. I am sure you came to your place through sincere seeking. What or where provided you with the message you found?

There is nothing wrong with creating what we like to see. Concentration, prayer, is good for that, hoping not so much.

 

I follow no religion and believe in no god, but science cant explain everything. There is something more powerful than us out there. Whether it's a god, aliens, or higher consciousness, i dont know, but there is something.
