Hi so I'm also new here lol but I have question. I was about to go ask my boss at the company I worked at if I may dreadlock my hair. I was gonna ask either today or tomorrow actually. Unfortunately I got news that due to my company having to go through mass budget cuts I am going to be laid off. This sucks especially since I flew the question by my boss and anyway and he said he would have been fine with it. No problem. So now I'm on the job hunt and am hitting the pavement, to speak, tomorrow. And I am wondering if I should be informing any potential employers my plans to dread my hair from the get go, or to just stay mum about it until I find a new job, and then drop the bomb shell on them?
Stay mum. That's what I plan on anyway. If they ask I'll answer but I plan on using my wit and charm to get a job.
I didn't tell my boss about it at work. Got a job with normal hair.... built up a good rep.... got dreads = Profit!
Def. don't tell future boss about it. That is like admitting there is something about it that interferes with work.
I agree. Dont say anything....get hired....do a good job...get on everybodys good side...then dread away. =] Last year my husband was paid under the table to give snowboard lessons to little tikes at sugar bowl resort....everything was fine till the big wig came by to check in on things. She took one look at him and blatantly said..."No...thats not gonna work" My man replied..."Why...what is it?" She said..."Its your hair...I cant have you work here with hair like that." My man nicely explained to her that his hair is part of his belief system and he wasnt going to change it. At which point she said..."fine...prove it to me". So he offered her a joint. lol. *No...just kidding he didnt do that* He actually brought in a copy of the Kebra Negast and started reciting lines from it. From then on she was cool with it and he was even asked to come back this season.
nice! sucks that he had to 'prove' anything to her in the first place but sounds like he handled it really well.
I'd say get the job first and then do it. Its easier to not hire someone for getting dreads than it is to fire someone for it.
Lucky man... had she been on top of her shit the reason would have been "Because you're getting paid under the table and that's against the law." Not trying to talk shit, but the world is a twisted place. Advice to the OP... get a job somewhere that is either out of sight of the general public or that allows you to wear a hat/beany. Or just be a badass and leave them knots out for the world to see... whatever. It'd be sweet if all it took was a rettyplease:, but it's better to just make it so that they have no other issues to fall back on if they want to can you. I have two jobs at the moment, at the first, a health/fitness club that tries to be "high end" (and almost succeeds), by choice I almost always wear my hair up. My other job is at a holiday ice rink where I was asked to wear my hair up or in a beany. At first I just said "no problem," but when I got to be more friendly with my manager I brought it up with her that it was lame of the head manager to not have asked me herself during the orientation, I then found out that it is their policy for men with long hair... I just happen to be the only long haired man working for them . The point is people may or may not hate on you... that's their problem. Just make sure they don't have any "legitimate" complaints and you should be fine.
I use to work in the stockroom of a retail furniture outlet. I've been throwing applications everywhere, while trying to keep the dreads in mind. Warehouse gigs, rock and roll paraphernalia stores, etc. Lol I need money so I can go to film school next year...
