The House has OK'd the amendment, so now it's up to the Senate to stop it. I hope you'll all take some time to write your senators and express your concern. If not, I hope to meet a few of you in jail after a flag burning party :)

    Peace :)

let's just burn the constitution instead.

i doubt it will make it through the senate, but these are indeed scary times.

Hell, we may as well...not like those gov't cats follow it anyway...seems they do what they want...oh and if the constitution says we can't...well, then, let's just amend it!

They always pull this stunt around 4th of July. Back on July 4th around 1986 they tried to pass a similar bill. Some members of Congress held an all-day rally on the 4th to try to pass an anti flag burning amendment.

So, what happens to someone who burns an American flag during their gay wedding? :)

I have never seen anyone burn a flag, and I run in some pretty lefty circles. I get the distinct impression that this is all designed to distract us from more important things like the Downing Street memo.

Yeah, they really do try to pull this shit every year around flag day or July 4th. We have a pretty conservative Congress this year, and it's more or less halfway through already. Hopefully it'll still get put down, but we'll see. I'm curious as to how it's worded though, because these hardcore "patriots" don't seem to realize it will effect them as well. Desecration of the flag? That includes your flag shirt, flag hat, flag blanket that you throw down to lay on to watch the fireworks, and any number of possibilities.

    Peace :)

I should be able to burn a flag in protest if I want. I wouldnt burn it to disgrace America. I love this country. I would do it in protest to our government!

Love the country, fear the government!

The funny thing is, you've followed the lead of the French. They implemented a "insult against the flag" law.

Burn your flag (or desecrate it in a nondangerous and environmentally friendly manner) for whatever reason you prefer. And others will do the same for whatever reasons they prefer.

    ***

This measure by the way isn't supposed to stay at the congressional level. If ultimately successful it's supposed to beome a constitutional ammendment.

So what's next? Laws prohibiting the desecration of the Bible? I assume it's still lawful to desecrate such works.

    Enjoy while it lasts.

Constitutional amendment, eh? And I thought these types were all about keeping the Constitution as it was originally written. I thought they railed against it being referred to as a "living document". I guess that works for them until they want to make something illegal and/or unpatriotic.

    What's that smell?

Seriously, people need to get over the 'sacred' flag. It's merely a peice of fabric. Besides, when I burned a flag with a few friends a while back it was to show our dislike of many laws and ideals of this country, not in raw hatrid of the country itself. We burned it as symbolism of our hopes that someday this country would be peaceful, non-capatilist, with little discrimination, and was truly free.

I found an interersting article on the flag here: http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0617-32.htm
