And yea, dont tell me to quit or that I got a problem or that im heading down a slippery slope. I walk into the casino with money after my rent and all my other shitty bills are paid. I dont expect to walk back out with the money I go in with. So yea, as long as I got that down I think im pretty well free to gamble as much as I please. And I spend plenty of time with family/friends I get no complaints from them that I got a problem. In fact, many of them come with me and we all do it together.
Now, lets get down to business, I just wanted to be sure all the preachers and shit were weeded out of this thread.
So, im a newbie gambler, started like a month ago. Im thinking "OMFG where was I when I was 21 this shit is a blast!". Yes I could give up video games now because ive found something just as fun, maybe even funner! But I want to get better at it and maximize my wins. From my research, ive learned that your best payout is the video poker. Ive been practicing poker on the internet on free video poker machines. I lose my ass all the time... it seems so simple! Im still not sure if I understand it well. I sat down with my bro and cousin one day at home and they tried to teach me pai gow poker and damn was it rough. Im wondering if im thinking too hard about it..
So can any seasoned gamblers fill me in on how I can learn to play poker real well? Ive learned blackjack, but now im hearing poker being touted as the best payout if you know what your doing. Now I know I wont get fucking filthy rich playing poker... especially video poker.. But hey I want to win at my game damnit. Just like anyone playing any other video game would like to win at it.
Oh and another question: Is it true that to get the best pay out you should abstain from the slots, or at least minimize slot play(they can be pretty damn fun sometimes!) and stick to the tables? I often worry though, that video blackjack/poker is equivalent to playing a slot machine.. Because, well.... im sitting at a fucking slot machine when I play those! You can switch to slots on the things.

Probably the only way to get good at poker is to play it.

I don't gamble much at all, but if I was going to I'd leave the casinos alone, horse racing too, and go for spread betting on stocks and shares.

I ONLY play Blackjack Plus THREE. Its regular blackjack with a side bonus, which pays out if its similiar to a poker hand. IE; your first two cards are 5 and 6. The dealers first card (he dosent flip them both) is a 4 or 7. Its a win on your bonus, pays out 9-1. You can get straights, flushes, pairs, colored.

I cant give you much advice on poker though, the only way to get good is to practice with friends before you go to the casino. You dont want to be an easy target that dosent know simple game rules.

DO NOT PLAY VIDEO BLACKJACK OR VIDEO POKER
    DO NOT PLAY SLOTS
TRY TO SIT AT TABLES WITH A SLOUTH NOT AN AUTOMATIC SHUFFLER.

    and drink alot

My advice is to play a lot so you can cut emotion out of it, and learn every bit of math of one game, and to always play by those rules. Thanks to Yahoo sports I have blown every Football pool I've been in away.

A video poker/blackjack is a joke. Go to the tables if you plan/want to win $$. Like mentioned, Loose the emotion of loosing and the facial expressions if you plan on winning.

The best days I have had, Was loosing! Next time you play the people, They will double up and you will get what you gave back plus double. The cards really don't mean shit, You are playing other players, Not the cards.

If you win, Cash out at $1200 every time so you don't have to pay tax on winnings. Uncle sam didn't win, Fuck him, Let him take his own chances. He did and look where his skill got us........

Play a one shoe deck or two if you have too. That way you can keep mental note of how many face cards will be in the deck. Don't always lay money on the line, If you have lost the last few hands, Pass the next couple hands. Let the cards get shuffled and shifted. People at the table bitch, But that's because you screwed up their 'winning' run.
The main part, Have fun! If you think you can retire off of it you are wrong. But you can make more at it than your day job if you learn what to do and the signs to look for. Good luck

^ What state? In Michigan my buddy won 14,000 at MGM but could only cash out 9,000 or he would be taxed. $1200 is petty change

Iowa. If you want to keep below the radar and not have to claim at the time of the win or claim winnings at the end of the year, The smart play is to cash out around $1200.
If you hit big like your friend, You 'have' to pay the bullshit tax, No way around it. But if you keep doing that with what you call 'petty', Ill win hand over fist $$ wise of what your friend won any day. He hit a big one and got raped, If you nickel and dime them, You will walk out ahead.

bro we hit up the casino all the time, that was one time he won that good but he usually is pulling at least 1000 a night. my best was only 2600 I played for about 5 minutes.

Not saying I dont believe you or whatever but we've never paid taxes, up in michigan at least. they specifically told him he only could cash out 9,000 I was there and he kept 5,000 in chips till the next day.

Blackjack is the only casino game where a player can change the odds. I forget the mans name, but he wrote a book in the 60s about card counting. There are many, many stories of people around the world learning this method and winning big bucks. The casinos have thrown out these players as soon as they discover they are using this method. There was a famous white guy that disguised himself as a fat chinese man and started winning some heavy bucks. They finally discovered who he was---86ed immediately! Now, I was too mentally lazy to learn the system (takes practice), but here's what I would do if I was into learning the system. I would learn it and then hit different casinos and ONLY win 4 or 5 hundred in each. Then I would go to a different town and do the same thing. The guys that got caught could NOT restrain themselves from trying to make hundreds of thousands and the casinos are not going to LET ANYONE do that on a regular basis. They have the eyes in the sky over every table. You get greedy---a pit boss will be notified and WILL show up--guaranteed 100 %. I think the mans name was Proffessor Thorpe and the book should be available.

Sooooooo---bottom line. You go to -say 10 casinos in Reno and take your few hundreds and then go to say--Vegas and do the same thing. Do not draw attention to yourself, get you bucks --and LIVE THE HIGH LIFE!!

1k a night? WTF im surprised he dont get kicked off the table. From what ive heard, casinos do not let you win real big like that on a regular basis. If you show signs of being extremely good at the cards they tell you to stay away from the table from what I hear..

I'm anti-gambling. However, I take substantial risks for a living. But I feel they are methodically assessed ones, in my favour.

My view on gambling is ONLY DO IT WHEN the risks are in your favour.

Otherwise its a pretty shitty, sleazy activity, in most forms.

Frankly most gambling is a mugs game. Only if you have a special edge and skills should you even be considering it, beyond a very low investment hobby.

I've looked at, and learned card counting for Blackjack. Only for academic reasons, a long while back. And seen how the world experts do it. Put simply, its not much of a job. Once you are good, you get banned. (They had facial recognition cameras MANY years before passports did). But if you are fodder, the casino will welcome you with open arms.

Gambling is a great way to make money... FOR THE GAMBLING COS!
But for the vast majority of big losers, gambling is nothing but a disease.
Its like legalised adverts for heroin on TV.

Thats petty change to casinos. I went last night and this guy was putting up 3,000 on roulette every spin. He won on number 4, he had put 500 on it and won a little over 17,000. They didnt give a shit about him when he won. Once you start doing things like having a crowd behind you, acting loud and obnoxious then the attention starts adding. If you just play and keep quite and dip after winning a grand your straight, back 2 years ago I used to go everyday. The pitbosses all knew my name, all the dealers knew me, I even was starting to get in without my I.D. at the door which is extrememly rare for a 23 year old. The pit bosses would joke with me, say okay lets see how long he plays today, 5 minutes or maybe he'll stay long and be here 15 minutes. They knew I only played 15 minutes tops and left right when I won. They didnt give a shit and ended up joking with my about my tactic and how much I was making every month. They'd be like I need to quit my job and do what you do haha

My dad and my brother both deal cards at the casino I frequent wich sometimes makes me wonder if they all are even more suspicious of me/us yet.
I DO know how to count cards, im just not well practiced in it. Sure I can do it sitting at home where its quiet. The real challenge and skill is to do it at the table in a noisy casino with players all around you asking you where your from and what you do for a living. Because ANYONE can count cards, its really easy as far as I know... Its as simple as remembering that 2=+1,3=+1,4=+1,5=+1,6=+1,7=0,8=0,9=0,10=-1,J=-1,Q=-1,K=-1,A=-1. I got that all down within minutes...You add the numbers together as the cards are dealt to get "true value" look at the shoe to estimate the number of decks and divide true value by the number of decks, and you start betting high if true value is +2 or higher. Thats my understanding so far, feel free to correct/update me.
I just cannot see how anyone focuses or concentrates on doing this simple addition/subtraction when at a noisy blackjack table and not showing symptoms of trying to concentrate. And also.. i'd have to make sure to come in when the deck is JUST shuffled, so ill have to like spy on all the tables till I see a dealer shuffle. Of course there are two tables im already banned from: any table my dad is dealing at, and any table my bro is dealing at.

I rarely ever gamble with the exception of the lottery and even then only when the amounts approach 400 million, with that said I heard some itinerant gambler lost 65K betting on The Undertaker in Wrestlemania

Last I heard the matches in Wrestlemania were predetermined (i.e. fixed) – Duh!
