I wonder if it's a cheap weekend getaway now that their national economy is essentially bankrupt.

Probably a great place to invest in real estate, too :D

No, but it would be a really "cool" place to visit sometime.

OK - so it would cost me $1400 to fly there, that's gay. If the gov't wants to promote some economic growth they should subsidize American travel out there.

Too bad because you can get a room at a 4 star hotel for $61 a night.

I was always told Iceland was a very green, and nice place to live.....but Greenland was the place covered in Ice. In attempts to keep people away of the paradise, and to attract people to the arctic.

May it was just a fucked up dream, I dunno. I'll google it tomorrow

Greenland used to be green, several hundred years ago, but has since frozen over and is now remelting. Ice covers only about 11% of Iceland.

Tourism is pretty much the only industry that's booming in Iceland at the moment, simply because everything's so much cheaper. Apparently lots of people fly there now for a weekend just to shop.

I have a friend from Iceland, he has two young kids and a wife and at the moment, he's struggling to pay his rent and feed his kids. He used to have a great job that paid well, he still has the same job, the pay is the same, the only difference is that now he can hardly afford anything with the money that used to be more than enough. And he says it's happening to everyone. It's harsh.

1400? No way! I have seen prices for under 500 roundtrip when the economy was better.

Actually I did Boston - Reykjavik - Paris - reverse for 420 two years ago.

    Iceland is like the moon

You can go from Boston or some other big city to Paris or some other big city through Reykjavik and have a stop over up to a week for no charge in Iceland.
