ok, just watched the craziest movie i've ever seen... "midori"... anyone heard of it? bizarre japanese animation (not typical anime) that reminded me of an s&m version of "amelie". came out in 1992. verrrry cool, great drawings (the entire movie was drawn by 1 man... took him 5 years), but extremely graphic and disturbing. you have been warned.
you're kidding, right? "midori" is so crazy it's banned in japan! it's amazing; someone really needs to back me up on this. i found it on crunchyroll (if you want to watch some crazy anime, sign up; it's free fun, kids) randomly and then after watching it, i did some research... they screen this movie in a tent-like setting with audience participation and things like fireworks and showers of rose-petals. i watched it on my computer with headphones on and i still found it to be extremely delightful and creepy. and GORGEOUS. the animation is fantastic- simple and evocative. it is quite shocking, though. i am really not kidding. worse than "strawdogs", even though it's animated. extreme violence and disturbing sexual scenes!!! not for children!!!!
I have the comics it was based on (Mr Arashi's Amazing Freakshow), and a couple of his other comics. He has a bunch better stuff than Midori IMO (check out the Ultragash Inferno collection, and a short comic called Planet of the Jap...probably one of the best 15+/- page comics ever written), but I definitely would love to see the movie still. It sounds like the animation would flesh out this awesome story a lot more than a black and white comic ever could.
wow. I downloaded "Midori no Hibi", and I'm guessing it is a very different thing from what you found. And all I can say about the series I found is "What the Fuck?" Seriously. What the Fuck. I really don't have any other words to describe my complete bafflement over this series. Too weird.
The Midori that you saw was also incredibly fucked up. Smashing puppies?!?! Wow, gruesome. The animation was terrific and very trippy at times. In all it was a little too bizarre for me to really enjoy, though. Worth a watch.
