Job applications have turned into a completely impersonal and practically pointless method of obtaining a job. Just recently I started searching for a job and I was under the impression you get dressed up real nice, create a resume and script for when you speak with a manager, bring a pen and notepad for notes and fill out your application and make a good impression. Now, The only way to get a job is to "go online and fill out an application". Now thats all fine and good IF they have the intention of hiring anybody but it seems like all I do is fill out a 45 minute questionnaire only to receive an email a few days later that says they are not interested. I always felt I had a great personality and that shined when I would go in and ask about jobs and speak with the manager. But it seems to me personality doesn't account for anything anymore. It all comes down to how good you look on paper. I'm so sick and fed up with the fact that you gotta know someone to get somewhere in life. All the best jobs are given to those whose mother is friends with the manager/owner. Craigslist is filled with nothing but kirby vacuum sales jobs and similar 100% commission jobs. Someone please tell me I'm crazy and finding a job isn't as hard as I'm making it out to be.

I was out of work for a year and had this same problem. Some jobs actually require you to fill out an application online now. Other's have little computers in a corner of the store that you have to use. I did have a few call backs from the online applications and a few interviews from them, but I ended up getting my job because I knew someone there and I volunteered there for a few months. Unfortunately, most jobs don't let you do that.

I wish you all the best of luck in finding a job. I know how hard it is now.

Fudge on your application and schmooze them during the interview. It's not rocket science.

try craigslist. Check it daily for a week.

I've gotten multiple jobs through craigslist, and some kickass bartending gigs for really rich people who tip a lot.

It's nice because you only see who's actually hiring. You don't waste 40 minutes filling out an application that no one will read.

In the good old days, it was much simpler.

Notice a Help Wanted sign in the window, walk in, introduce yourself, and the job is yours.

Today, one must literally jump through hoops just to be considered for a job position. No guarantee, though.

thats why I love being a programmer

    shitton of job opportunities everywhere
they take you when you prove you know what you said you know
I don't even have to have a job to make money
but when I get a job, I am sure that I'll get shitton of money

finding job is easy when you know something (and are good at it) that many people need, but there are not enough qualified workers
