After all this is the hipforums. I guess it depends on how you define hippy though. Some people would say that because I go barefoot and believe in peace, I'm a hippy. But does having hippy qualities make a person a hippy. Oh, and I much prefer string/hemp/handmade stuff if I ever would buy jewelry. Can anyone here say that they ARE a hippy, or are we a collection of barefooters on a hippy forum.
I guess I'm too "establishment" (using the term from the 60's) to be a hippy. I enjoy life's conveniences, have "respectable" hair, nice clothes, etc. I certainly identify with the message of the 60's, but I'm not into communes, drugs, "causes," etc. I'm sort of envious of the hippy thing, but only as it's romanticized. I guess I'm more of a barefooter on a "hippy forum."
Me? I'm a political centrist, a thrice-weekly communing Catholic and sexual prude (big surprise there). My style of dress is overgrown frat boy, and my drug of choice is Grey Goose. Yes, my financial fortunes are down at the moment, but I'm hoping -- praying, actually -- for that to change. So, to answer your question, no. I'm a very conventional person who sheds his shoes whenever possible, and the rest of his clothes when he thinks he can get away with it.
This question I hear is, “what does it mean to be a hippy”? The paradox is that as soon as you answer this question, you define the term, thereby implying an orthodoxy which, by definition, cannot exist. I’d say that anyone who considers themselves a hippy is one and anyone who claims they “used to be” a hippy never was one. That said, I am, and always will be, a hippy.
IMO, it's an inside (heart, mind and soul) thing rather than mere outer appearance. But since barefooting also projects non-conformism, regardless of a barefooter's walk of life, it does befit a hippie mindset, to be sure. Even though I have to dress a bit more normally when at work, that hasn't changed my inner flower child. Wiggling happy hippie toes, ~*Ganesha*~
most modern-day barefooters, i mean those who face confrontation with the shod world are at least partially hippies... sometimes without even noticing. only a hippie or a punk could do that, but the punk are too fond of combat boots. :iagreeut of joke i think seohsreven hit the issue and ganesha sank it :iagree:
I like that! That probably summarizes where I'm at. My original comments related to whether I embrace the entire hippie lifestyle, which I don't. The non-conformist and "inner flower child" - definitely!
I guess I'm not really much of a hippy, especially politically... Though I am vehemently anti-war if that means anything.
I can't honestly say I'm a hippie, and I doubt anybody else would mistake me for one. This forum just seems to be one of the more active and reasonable for someone interested in connecting with other barefooters. So, I can't argue against being part of the "collection of barefooters on a hippy forum."
I think of myself as a hippie, though I don't dress the part, except for bare feet. I generally have a laid-back attitude on life. Live and let live. Although I don't do drugs, I don't feel that they should be illegal, especially pot.
I have the same laid back style. I have had people (even salespeople) comment that I am brave for being comfortable shopping barefoot.
I am a bit of a hippie... I'm in favor of recycling and second-hand things, I bike and ride trains rather than driving, I am not a vegetarian but I do buy ecological food a lot. I have the live and let live attitude, where simply having enough to live on is more important than being 'one up on the Jones'' or otherwise participating in the rat race. I also like some other hippie type clothing; jeans with patches for example. I wish I didn't have such ultra-thin hair or I'd try dreads! But I haven't even tried pot even though it is legal here, I hardly ever travel (not even with a backpack) and I'm not into the music either (couldn't name a single band or artist that was at Woodstock).
A couple of your comments are interesting: I'm unaware of any place where pot is legal, although it's tolerated in the Netherlands... Given the span of years since the term first came to light, I'd say that being an enthusiast of a given genre of music is not imperative. As long as you like music in general, I don't think you'll be branded as an evil imperialist .
Okay, sorry, I get annoyed when people are careless when posting things about barefoot-related rules or laws too, but since you can indeed openly buy pot, smoke it, carry small amounts and even in most places grow up to 5 plants, it's close enough for me. ::shrug:: Actually I hardly play any music at all, last week when I cleaned the room I wiped quite a layer of dust on my CD player and I only turn it occasionally, not even once a month. The speakers of my computer are usually turned off, and I don't own a television either. I prefer silence!
big point against prohibitionism: prohibitionists tell us all the time that if the ban on pot is lifted we shall get streets crowded with raging potheads, many underage, while in the facts it is the black market that affects the youngsters - in a controlled regime they have no direct access to pot and being legal, cheap stuff smuggling it to the children is too much of an unpaid risk since prices can't be raised much over. where pot is legal many like you shun it without a second thought , maybe because the 'forbidden thing' lure is missing. traveling in bare feet by bike or hitch-hiking, but with a tent (you never know), is great. never tell me about travel agencies , please.
i try to live green, politically very far left, however, i do occasionally eat meat. i'll call myself a barefooter with hippy beliefs, i guess.
