Is it ok to drink things containing aspartame while breastfeeding? I mentioned to someone how I wanted to start drinking things like crystal light to cut my caffiene addiction (I'm more addicted to flavors than the caffiene affect I think) and they mentioned that aspartame is in that stuff soooo... I was wondering if anyone knows for a fact if you are suppose to stay away from those things while breastfeeding. Anyone have any suggestions for other good alternatives? I'm hoping by cutting out all these bad habits I'll improve my health and lose a little weight without dieting. I drink a ton of water as it is, I'm just trying to find some other things to drink besides juices.
If you or one of your children has PKU, then this drug is out. (And, in the scheme of things, it is a drug, not really a food.) There is nothing saying that every womyn or every baby reacts to this drug, but it can and does cause headaches and other syptoms in many people. According to some studies done on this drug: That's the best information we have. There have been studies linking these types of sweetners to actually causing your body to crave sugar and other calories even more than it did before. In many studies the use of this drug did not help people lose weight at all, in fact many gained weight while using it. I know if I accidentally drink Crystal Light I get a violent migraine within an hour or so. I stay away from the stuff. I also don't allow my kids to have it (you would be amazed at the number of people who actually serve sugar substitutes at children's birthday parties. Makes no sense.) and I don't have it in the house. Water is a great drink. The best, IMO. If you occasionally crave a sweet drink you are probably better having an occasional glass of real lemonade, made with real sugar, than something as chemical laden as Crystal Light. But, if you want to try it, keep an eye on the baby for the next 36 hours or so, it is hard to tell if a baby has a headache. Most will cry or be unually quite, while a few will bang their heads. Chances are that there won't be enough in your milk to cause a reaction in your baby, but keep an eye on Riley if you do decide to drink anything with aspartame in it.
Don't ingest aspartame any time. It causes a variety of ailments, including cancer and blindness. It contains methanol, the ingredient that can cause blindness in improperly made moonshine. Since everything you eat will go into your breast milk, you will likely be transferring it to your baby. And that's poisoning them. Dont do it.
if you like the taste of aspertame, use stevia. it has a similar sweet in that way taste, and it's totally natural and a good sugar alternative. i'm serious - stevia tastes a lot like aspertame, and it's totally safe.
Aspartame isn't good for anyone, let alone babies. I urge everyone to stay away from this toxic, harmful substance, regardless if they have PKU or not. Aspartame is an excitotoxin composed of phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methyl (wood) alcohol. The stuff would have never been approved if it wasn't for war criminal Donald Rumsfeld (who was in bed with the FDA), who was the CEO of JD Searle at the time, which is the company that patented Nutrasweet in the early 1980s. I believe aspartame is partly to blame for many ailments that Americans are afflicted with today, one of which is obesity. I've never seen a thin person buying a 12-pack of Diet Coke at the store. Aspartame only makes you fat. For one, it causes a craving for sweets. Secondly, it destroys the metabolism and is believed to cause metabolic syndrome. This can be attributed to the drug's (yes, aspartame is a DRUG) neurotoxic effects. Aspartame is POISON! The number of health problems aspartame is attributed to is endless. Please, stay away from the garbage, and defintiely do not drink it if you are breastfeeding. That would be insane.
nothing with a name like that can be good.=/.. I to have a VERY bad caffeine addiction! try teas!?.. I just had a nettle red raspberry tea I made my own BF-ing blend. I add some ginger or lemon soy milk at times it's a nice alternative to anything else including juice which are VERY high in sugar. If you want I can send you a jar.. it brings my iron up and makes me feel good
I agree that aspertame is not a healthy thing to ingest, but this: Is simply NOT true. The majority of what you ingest, food or drugs, does NOT get into your milk. Most drugs and foods are completely safe, the breast is the best filter in the human body, this side of the liver. Aspertame, however, does, in small quantities. Which is why they tell mothers of PKU babies not to ingest it. Earthymama, if you have the time (I know, it's hard with a houseful of kids) do some of your own research if you can. But IMO, it is really safer, if you want an occasional sweet drink, to simply have a small amount of a drink with real sugar in it. JMO.
alternatives: herbal teas. they're nutritive and most are pleasant tasting without any sweeteners and there are soooooo many flavour options, and it's really inexpensive. i like keeping a big glass pitcher of iced tea in the fridge during the summer, or i'll make some sun tea in the windowsill. if i need it sweetened, i'll add one to two drops of stevia per full cup of liquid. any more than that ruins the taste. and do not, i repeat, do not buy tea that already has stevia in it~~in my experience, they always use wayy too much. i think you're smart to cut the juice too, it wreaks havoc on blood sugar and insulin levels, even for non-diabetics.
