Hey all I am in search of natural remedies to assist with asthma attacks. I am so tired of carting an inhaler around all of the time and not having anything else to try when that does not work. Any suggestions would be great. Being on meds all the time just sucks in general for me.
I've had asthma for many years and here's what I've learned. Diet and environment are huge factors in asthma. Some foods that can make your asthma worse are wheat and anything that has wheat in it. Read the labels. Any kind of dairy products will also tend to clog you up so try to stay away from them. Also salt is another thing that will make asthma worse. It's hard to give up but it can be done. You've got to stay away from smoke of all kinds. Very important. Eat a diet that is high in complex carbs which means whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal, millet, rye and buckwheat. Beans are good including soy and soy products like tofu. And eat lots of cooked and raw vegetables. Go easy on the sugars. Even natural sugar like honey or in fruit can easily be overdone. Nuts and seeds are good including nut butters but it's best to get them really fresh or grind them fresh yourself as rancid nut butters are not good for you. A little oil like olive oil is good. Even a little meat can be OK. Fish is great but unfortunately eating it a lot can be dangerous now because of mercury. There are some fish that are lower in this than others. You can find that out on the internet. If you're willing to move, the type of climate you're in can make a HUGE difference. Think of being where it's dry like Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Western Colorado and Western New Mexico. When I lived in NM my asthma went completely away. Also very important is keeping your cats outside. Stay away from dust especially household dust. It can really mess you up. So you see there's lots you can do. You're right to want to get off the meds. Those things are not good for you in the long run. Good luck and PM me if you have any questions.
Thank you for the suggestions I can do all but moving and the beans I am allergic to the baens and to close to my family and other aspects to leave.

Just wanted to add that frying foods in oil is not that good for ya. When oils are heated up chemical changes occur that make them harder to handle and can even be toxic at high temps. Best to bake, steam and simmer stuff.
Well just don't char anything as that is carcinogenic. Hey another thing I forgot was you're spose to wash your sheets, blankets and pillowcases frequently and wrap your mattress in plastic and put special slipcovers on your pillows because they get these little critters called dust mites which can cause asthma. Also if you can do it get a vacuum system where the hoses plug into the walls and the unit is not in a living area because this makes for a lot cleaner air in your house. I realize this is a lot of stuff to do and you can't do it all at once but these are all the things that have helped me over the years so I'm just passing them on. Cheers
Thank you so much for all of your suggestion it has been years since I have not had to deal with this since i was a kid so it is all new to me. Do you know if grilling on my gas grill is ok or not?
outdoors? should be ok. natural gas can be a particulate irritant, too. do you drink black tea, coffee or caffeinated sodas? caffeine is a bronchio-dilator. Look up mullein. I'll bet it grows wild near you. Some users report lessening of chest tightness from smoking it, which always sounded counter-intuitive to me (but I have sensitivities to smoke in general)
I have a natural gas stove but it doesn't seem to bather me or maybe I do not realize it does. I grill on a propain grill out side. I drink alot of tea and coffee. But I do not believe I could smoke any thing as like you smoke makes it really hard to breath.
It completley depends on the enviorment. I was born a sick kid and iv had asthma my entire life. It fucking sucks thats for sure. I grew up outside of seattle in a small town in the middle of the montains. Breathing air is amazing, but there is tons of pollens, animals, and different types of grass. Most of these killed me. House cats espically. First time i slept over at a friends house i was 13. EVERYONE had damn house cats. They kill me everytime. Point being what you hear about diet? Well i have never noticed that in my asthma. Im sure its true though. Know your syntoms well then pick a place to live. It sucks really but how it makes life easier. I never had to do my daily meds back home. Very very rarely was i like "son of a bitch i need my stuff". Now im in college and i need my meds easly 10 or 15x more times per month so it seems. For some people me being one. Anxiety can be a huge factor sometimes. The more you think you have asthma, the more times u may get attacked. Its fucking true for me. I dont think about it for 2 months my asthma was pretty good yea? Well the next month for whatever reason your mind set is the other way. You need meds more. Call me crazy but iv noticed that in this life of mine lol. Never think about what you have, take care of yourself, and youll be fine. Ses very true as said above about pillows. Im supposed to repalce my pillows every month! I dont though. They make a huge difference -.-
Thanks to all of you for your advise. I have had asthma since I was a kid this is just the worst it has ever been. Right now with the Good Old Missouri weather ever changing and prestently butt freezing cold it is not good at all.
Thanks for all the tips I even passed them on to a girl at work and linked someone else with questions on here to this thread.
