well i was making guacomole today and i decided instead of throwing the seeds away i should grow a plant. well i need some advice on how to start the seeds. i also know that the tree wont produce fruit for about 10 years or so unless i graft a branch from a avocado tree that already produces the fruit..i gues it is a fruit lol. does anyone know how old the tree should be when i graft on? well anyways any advice would help. thanks alot!!
"does anyone know how old the tree should be when i graft on?" I looked through a lot of my reference stuff and couldn't find the answer, but for some reason I think it's 3 to 5 years old. Peace, poor_old_dad
ive germanated a avocado seed by puting it in a ziplock bag with air and a damp papper towl.in a warm dark place.when the tap root was out about 3 inches i planted it.it lived for about 3 years,(im in zone 4)so i had to keep i in a pot.i dont think they like being in pots. good luck and i would be interested in hereing your out come with this project, keep us updated. peace
I took an avocado seed and put it in a container with of soil, watered it and it is now about 3 feet tall and about a year and a half old. You don't have to graft it except that the fruit from the seed tree will not be true to type (if I remember correctly).
those of you who have been semi successful, did you put them in the sun? so it's a fruit, huh? peace. LP
Mine has been in full sun since it sprouted. I looked it up and the avocado "fruit" is technically a berry or drupe. It also recommended being at least a year old before grafting.
Well thats good i live in vegas doesnt get too cold here. Well i asked my grandpa about it and he told me to put toothpicks in the side of them so i could set it on a glass rim and have half of it in water and half of it out. well its been like this for about 2 weeks i think it will sprout soon or ive failed miserably haha. If they dont sprout in another week or so ill just buy some more avocados make some guacomole and start again with a different method lol.
You can also make carvings out of the seed. Let it sit a day, peel the outer layer, split it in half, carve it, let it set until it looks like wood... BTW, they take many many years to compost.
We've had one for years now in our living room. Sprouted it by the toothpick in water method. It's a tree. I have to prune it regularly because it wants to grow through the ceiling. I'm sure we don't get near enough sun for it to make fruit and it's too cold for outside here, but it makes a nice houseplant. P.S. it took weeks to germinate.
just a tidbit, wile kayaking on the missippi yeterday i thru a avocado seed in the river.maybee itll germanate and grow when it gets down south. peace frog

Well the bad news is i failed at trying to grow them. But the good news is im not giving up and i just started another one with the toothpick method. And in a bigger container so the water does evaporate as fast haha.
Here's a picture of ours. This is about 8 years old. I would put the seed somewhere that you will see it everyday, so that you will remember to top off the water. We put ours in the kitchen sink window. It took several weeks to sprout.
And here are pictures of the first ones I've tried. Thanks, Miss Fleassy! I call this "If 6 was 9" This is the front: And this is the back:
tarabelle--your carvings are really nice, but the tree is awesome! I was sure my mom had the biggest house avacado around, but I was wrong!
Thanks! We are fairly amazed at that tree too. We just sprouted it to show our boys that the seed would grow. It must of been from hardy stock or something.
Wow your tree looks great!! That is exactly where i decided to put mine is in the kitchen window sink. Im just going to sit back and relax and home it sprouts.
