Jeremy Paxman refused to cross the picket line... but old fave Mr Terry Wogan went to work as usual... Scab or Not? Let's have a heated debate
I wonder how much this is a hangover from the change of management brought about as a consequence of the Hutton inquiry. The new management style seems to be about imposing its iron will on the creatives and the journalists within the BBC rather than involving them. People like Mark Byford and Mark Thompson who are supporting this were the ones who rushed to back the government in its case against the BBC and seem in this regard to be little more than New Labour stooges. It's unlikely that cutting 20% of BBC workers (including relatively few management) could be achieved without seriously altering the nature of the Beeb. And to do that without negotiation with the unions is just rude.
my dad works for the beeb, and he actually agrees with what the dude is trying to do, even though it might affect his job...
Anecdote The news progrmmes are full of repeats anyway..those nice people within News 24 did a great job ... jeremy paxman not on for a night 'The end of the world is upon us'. Maybe if these kind of people were on a little less money then not so many jobs would have been cut ?.
i do like it when there is a rucus at the bbc. i think terry wogan is an awful scab! you would have thought that a good, well respected morning radio dj like our dear friend tez would have been more supportive to his colleagues...im not happy wogan!! grr
I wonder of those that went on 'strike' did it for appearance sake only..more than anything else.. The 'big guns' protecting there pay checks..?.
Thats true..still, taking away my cynical thought and i am still thinking they did it to show some support for there 'comrades' in part for selfish reasons.
hi there well scab.. no one should cross a picket line not even the workers for a capitalist company who produce tv programmes with the government in good view..{ie the miners strike in the 1980s which i grew up in and look at the tv coverage, the anti bnp march , poll tax march ,all coverage to make the working class people look BAD.......then....the anti war demos not much there either....so you see not just strike, but shut down and take it back for the people.....} this is all part of the system that capitalists .profit makers get from the poor through taxs......those... who watch their channels......who believe some of what they are told..... end bbc itv and cable tv, get rid of all right wing bosses..... let the people run the stations more people could be involved... not the fat cats who defend many government ideas even if they run a show that reflects on a little of the reality in the world..to please the lefties..... ie faith the miners film, etc... this is all part of slavery.......our slavery to capitalism.... it will not change unless we end a world for profit no one will gain alot from this strike, because they go back to work for the same people who caused them to strike.........again capitalists who are looking to cut back ,for profits before looking after their workers...... thank you for interesting question i feel terry wogan should not be on tv how the hell did he get on there, he is a racist man really and defends the right wing in very obvious ways..ie uro song contest he still has those little digs at other cultures whilst trying to hid his irish tongue... poor man ..... get rid of him .. lovenpeace from saff
Do you watch TV ? I can't recognise much about what you are cross about..TV shows the reality of the world quite a lot... TV can't be as biased as yourself and if TV was ever taken over by 'the people' (your kind of people i imagine) how do you think it would reflect reality any better ? .. It is run by normal people already.. The only thing i dislike is it is full of contradictory information and panders to the middle ground to much..but thats the supposed fair and balanced POV i suppose. It would be nice if TV was more like this and other forums and had more varied opinions and a bit more 'grit' it is very safe and ordered. But realy if you filled TV with the 'fuck bush' (ther good and the bad kind) posse or 'pro war' (ther good and the bad kind) and all the other multitude of peoples opinions..it would be a editorial mess.. and people would turn off in droves..Thankfuly if you discriminate what you watch and don't watch crap, TV can be a blessing and highly informative (even if you don't agree with the information).. I think the BBCis fat and bloated and has more staff than it actualy requires especialy within the news department.. some broadcasts have outside broadcast just for style purposes and nothing more.. do we realy need andrew marr outside No. 10 for a 3 minute segment ?..nope. All these things have been looked at and discussed by the media watchers..but nothing changes. I liked the stripped down presentation with ordinary reporters and not 'darlings' like natash kaplinsky and such..who was probably out shopping on the day of the strike.. Jeremy paxman had to take the day of it is a almost given that he would not cross the line..almost suicide to his career i suppose. I noticed they picked a day with no real 'clout' if they had picked aThursday then i would have been impressed. Terry wogan is not rascist at all..so he has a little giggle and his comments are annoying but far short of rascism i think... He is just extremly bored and thats his wit, he takies the piss out of the individual whoever or werever they may come from... If he was rascist why would he do it in the first place.. do you realy think he would be allowed back after so many years if he was rascist?...be reasonable.
Just a point of fact ... the BBC is a not-for-profit public corporation, in no conceivable way can it be construed as a "capitalist company".
hi there many tv programmes are just that programmed to how we are in time to think and feel, with the underlining fact that this is slavery with in our way forward in thinking, keeping the very essence of change in the background........... no movement of reactions that pass anger, yes i feel tv offer a little truth but always after the horror of the time.. and also it only offers a light relief after the day,to laugh or focus on the screen ,off many views.. many lost reminders of our world the real one.not a scripted empty soap opera ,ie eastenders or political.which will only allow what the government allows.... do you really believe these companies tell us ie bbc itv what is truth every last bit,, and yes any company which it built around the system for the fat cats is a capitalists idea. other wise why are people striking against its our hand that pays the wage.or sacks them. wages are here because profit is the means to an end....pensions.......the last payout a company is supposed to do whthin this system..... so to end this, is to end who runs and who writes what listeners hear which is what the writers want the people to hear.......not always truth just words of slight reflection of the reality we live within ,ie again the miners strike....... try the truth it may hurt but its for all to know....
hi there good comment of cause they ignore racism just look back on tv no little comments about other people should not be ignored its all part of the programming of peoples thougths.. towards eachother well other cultures....being better more english... imperial..... do you honestly believe they dont see racism in the workers on tv...... no they choose to ignore its a company who promotes more than truth its damn tv....it has to entertain a mass of slaves........ love npeace from saff dont ignore the little bits they mount up .towards this world.....
What a load of bollocks. It's people like you who give socialism a bad name. Ever heard of freedom of thought? Y'know, where we actually think for ourselves rather than blindly following dogma? How can you possibly make such a sweeping generalisation as the one in that statement? Every individual must follow their own conscience and decide for themselves the rights and wrongs of each situation. Just because they don't happen to agree with your moral assessment of the situation, it doesn't make them a 'scab'. Are you suggesting that people should always follow the will of a trade union regardless of their own personal opinions?
