Stop torture and ill-treatment in the “war on terror”

Human rights are under threat. The ban on torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment – the most universally accepted of human rights – is being undermined. In the “war on terror”, governments are not only using torture and ill-treatment, they are making the case that this is justifiable and necessary.

Those who claim to set their human rights standards high are at the forefront of this assault. The USA is one such government. Their conduct influences governments everywhere, giving comfort to those who commit torture routinely and undermining the very values the “war on terror” is supposed to defend.

They speak of “coercive interrogation” but when the door to torture is opened, the pressure is always upward. If one slap doesn’t work, then a beating will follow. If a beating doesn’t work, what comes next? We see the photographs, hear the testimonies. It is cruel, inhuman; it degrades us all.

Take action to call on the USA to take a lead in reasserting what President Bush called “the non-negotiable demands of human dignity” and on all States to play their part in stopping the use of torture and ill-treatment.

Abdurahman Khadr, a canadian who ended up working undercover for the CIA plainly stated that what he saw prior to filling gitmo up was a cash for 'suspects' program initiated by the US government. He also ended up in Gitmo as part of the contract and plainly stated that he believed many of the individuals there had never once committed a crime and were there soley because someone had turned them in for the cash and that's it.

If a foreign country (or even our own gov) took over ours and started offering sums of money to many of our impoverished citizens to turn in 'terrorists', how many scrupulous Americans would we find? I would take a gander that there would be alot of innocent people in jail simply because Bob doesn't like Fred and could use the cash.

The lie that everyone in Gitmo is a 'terrorist' bent on cutting the heads off of Americans is what is spoonfed to the public through major media channels. Like good little kids, they lap it up without question or thinking.

i do agree with you on some points, and i do believe in rooting out terrorism (altho i was against going into iraq).

problem is, the u.s. has had troops in many islamic countries forever, and these people have had enough of our presence... so in their mind, WE started the war.

 

I think some people should 'chill' with the whole 'torture' thing.. i think that picture does not represent 'torture' ... who is the person under the hood what has that person done.. does any one know ?? . He could have shot a soldier or a civillian for all we know . Do we know if the soldier was merely threatning or actualy hitting this person.. ?. Nobody knows. I don't think hitting any one is aceptable, but these type of pictures are put up for a reason, to support a wholly OTT response to Guantánamo (and other such institutions). I do appreciate 'humiliation' is offensive who does that ? fucking idiots thats who and this is held up as 'widespread' and evidence of 'torture'..well that is bollocks imho . When these idiots get caught i hear 'show trial' 'cover up' etc etc ..again thats bollocks imho . I realise everything in the land of Guantánamo is not rosey.
