I am a feminist, and I'm proud of it, yet there is a down side. The majority of students and my ignorant High School just assume I'm a lesbian because I consider myself a feminist and I like to wear flannel (its crazy I know) I am not a lesbian, but how do I deal with those who assume I am without yelling or getting angry?

Flannel rocks. Lots of people think feminists are lesbians, it's so stupid. I'm not a big big feminist or anything, but this girl I know is, and she used to tell guys who said that "Of course I'm a lesbian..I used to date guys like you" ... rofl ok so it's a shallow, stupid comeback, but it was funny :D people need to not make so many assumptions about people.

"Shallow, stupid comeback"?? Surely you jest - that's BRILLIANT! I'm going to have to remember that one...

artsy_freak45, the next time someone calls you a lesbian, smile and say "Thanks!" As long as people keep thinking that a lesbian is a bad thing to be, they will keep using it as an insult. It depresses me that young folks today are using "gay" to describe something they consider stupid and lame ("Your taste in music is so gay!"). What you need to do is reclaim the term. Stop using "gay" and "lesbian" as insults. Use them as they were intended, or to describe something that's cool. Take away the badness, you take away the insult. Then the idiots will need to find a new word to insult you with. Then you take THAT away from them. See how it goes? Give it a try, and I wish you all the best. [IMG]

or you could say something like "Just because I'm smart enough/not enough of a whore to date you, doesn't mean I'm a lesbian". Not quite as witty as the earlier suggestion, but this way you aren't giving them any confirmation that you are a lesbian (nothing wrong with lesbians at all, just sayin..)

i was in the elevator with a drunken kid wearing his fraternity shirt earlier this semester. i sparked conversation, talking about how fucking fantastic the denny's reese's peanutbutter cup pie in my hands smelt, and how me and my roommates are going to slaughter it. we he got off on his floor, the moment he stepped out, he said "fucking gay ass fag", and ran off. i truly, initially thought it was HILARIOUS, partially confused though too. i almost immediately made the connection that it was because i was wearing a solid purple shirt, and that's enough in his mind to jump to such conclusion, muchless have such horrible feelings provoked inside of himself. i'm not remotely homosexual, however i have not a damn thing against it. the next 20 minutes i felt a little ackward, partially because he thought i was gay, and partially because the fact that such disgusting people, or at least ethos(definition:the way you act in reflection to your worldview), is in the dorms. the thought, which seemed inevitable, that so many others see such things as not only homosexual, but seeing ANY object as a symbol towards THEIR interpretation of the meaning of that object. maybe not even remotely remotellly aware that their god damn interpretations are just opinions, veryyyyy subjective and uninformed, solely THEIR learnt assumptions... then i think, god damn, how these learnt assumptions are probably shared by such a huge amount of the youth nowwadays =\. i hope it isn't, but eh... that's my experience, from a very straight, kind-loving person who is apparently now homosexual =\.

You don't have to be a lesbian to be a feminist, just stupid and bitchy

I don't really mind being assumed to be lesbian... However, I was often assumed to be BOTH lesbian and a white supremicist (I am neither)... So, I stopped shaving my head...

You must be a feminist yourself then, since your post was nothing but stupid and bitchy...

    Good one
However, it is an observation which is definently educated (there's shitloads of feminists at my former church) and not bitchy at all. Blunt yes, bitchy no

    My favorite comeback is:

"I'm more of a man than you'll ever be and more of a woman than you'll ever see."

The first part wouldn't be good for use in a thread about being called a lesbian

i hate it when people assume. i was out with my best friend the other day, and we linked arms and were walking around with some friends. out of nowhere this old guy came up behind us and was hissing 'kiss kiss kiss! man i love me the lesbians'. yeah, it was rude so my benny boy kicked his ass. and also a lot of people at my school assume i am with my friend jazzy just because we sort of keep to ourselves. i guess it looks like were always together. ah well, people can assume what they want. i dont really care as long as they stay out of my face about it.

All we have to do is be "stupid and b**chy"? What, stupid enough to want to vote, be paid the same amount of money for the same effort, have careers besides nursing and teaching, be known as something besides the lady who stays at home doing the dishes and laundry, keep our last names instead of becoming Mrs. Husband's Last Name, have the freedom to choose to wear pants in public, have a career first instead of getting married at age 17, go to college...Stupid enough to realise that the only difference between a man and a woman is the anatomical structure?
