I understand it's a potent anticholergic, but as a sleep aid it's terrible. 50mg and I hallucinate. I was lying down after it had taken effect. It was dark with some LED's here and there from various things. I was hallucinating all sorts of shit. Stuff moving around in front of the LED's, stuff retracting into darkness as I look at it. Bah

I've tripped on 600mg's of diphenhydramine before, and it was probably one of the worst experiences of my life. Obviously it's not meant for that, but it's not fun.

    Ranting I guess.

I'm in total agreement, it's the worst OTC, ever.

No, worst OTC is reserved for tylenol and CCC's . . .

diph isnt that terrible as a sleep aid. I prefer doxylamine, but diph will do if its all thats around me . . .

sam stands corrected: apap, aka "liver killer" should top the list.

Hahah liver killer. DPH works as a sleep aid, but I could do without the creepy hallucinations. Luckily it was just some left over from a Tylenol PM box. I usually use Doxylamine as well. When I need to.

benedryl ISNT a sleep aid, its an antihistamine, so, thats why its a shitty sleep aid.

It's an antihistamine with sedative side effects. If you were the CEO of Park Davis, would you not market both angles?

I'm told to take Benadryl 50mg as a sleep aid because I can't ever sleep through my chronic headches without something in me. But the diph. only keeps me alseep for 4 hours or so, then Ican either chance it and try to get random sleep the rest of the night all naturale, or pop an 800mg ibuprofen, which usually allows me to sleep through the rest of the night. It's the only time ibuprofen does anything for me. Some nights I get to crash on oxys, though, and I sleep famously

It's been said that diph. disrupts our ability for the "deep sleep" mode, the dreaming stage.

I thought the dreaming stage was the shallower part of sleep, like the time right before you wake up. When I have a nap, it's a shallow sleep and can be very dream-oriented.

I don't know which scenario is more destructive to me: a sleepful night with no dreams, or a sleepness night....

A lot of sleep meds knock you past certain stages of sleep. Not sure which ones do which.

But once again, weed is probably the safest and most effective sleep aid.....

Calea Zacatechichi is a great sleep aid, and it doesnt prevent dreams, but makes them awesomer. Benadryl pisses me off, I went to a doctor for chronic insomnia (for the third time), and he told me to take benadryl. I told him Id taken tylenol PM which gave me restless legs, but he basically said 'I dont care, youre not getting medication.' Damn doctors and their ethics.

I took diphenhydramine for years for sleep (25-50mg/night) and it worked fine. When my otc bottle ran out, I went to a doctor here (I live in Asia now) and he told me that he could only prescribe 5mg diphenhydramine at the most, and sleep aid was an off label use (so he'd have to write it up as an allergy treatment). I said that there was no way 5mg would do it, so he flipped through his meds book and found another similar type of antihistamine drug that could be prescribed for both allergies and sleep. What's weird is that the stuff knocks me out way more than diphenhydramine ever did. I think it's promethazine that I take now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promethazine
