I use naim, seriously. It does what I want it to do - text chats with encryption support. here's a screen shot http://naim-users.org/nmlorg/naim/screenshots
The majority of people I know prefer AIM + DeadAIM. I prefer Trillian Pro, which is a multi protocol instant messenger. It also supports yahoo, msn, and ICQ. I've also heard good things about GAIM and Miranda, but haven't tried either of those out yet.
Check out waste for encrypted file sharing and chat. It uses over 1000+ bit encryption and can be an excellent tool for keeping chats private or sending sensitive material. waste.sourceforge.net taken from the website: WASTE is an anonymous, secure, and encryped collaboration tool which allows users to both share ideas through the chat interface and share data through the download system. WASTE is RSA secured, and has been hearalded as the most secure P2P connection protocol currently in development. For technical information please see "information", but for more information on download and installation, please see "downloads". Looking for other WASTE projects? Please choose "projects", or if you are interested in the main WASTE sourceforge project, see "sourceforge". Or, if you just need some help with WASTE, see "documentation".
Naim looks uglllyyyyy. I mean chat program isnt supposed to look that good, but naim looks pretty poorly made. Try gaim, its simple, efficient, and works realy well.
heh, naim is not poorly made, its just for those of use that prefer command line apps to gui ones. During chat, its too much work for me to move my hand from the keyboard to the mouse. In fact, I dont like doing it much at all. I use many command line apps for my day to day needs. I use them to print, to edit files, to send emails for irc, aim, installing software, managing my files etc. I just use a gui to hold all the text windows.
_Personally, I like Adium, it supports: AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, Rendezvous, Yahoo! Japan, Gadu-Gadu, Jabber, Napster, Novell GroupWise & Lotus Sametime.
without a doubt, the best AIM client I have ever used is iChat, by Apple. Of course, you have to be either lucky or smart enough to own an Apple Computer. My condolences to all of you still wasting time trying to fix all of the problems arising which inhibit your productivity, created by windows flaws. Spyware? Pop Ups? You're kidding, right? I never see them on a Macintosh.
ahh, yes, I know, macs are somewhat pricey. you certainly get what you pay for however, as mine is now nearly 5 years old, still running the latest software, high intensity programs such as photoshop and video editors, dreamweaver for websites, does all of my photo printing, music archiving, everything I could want. You could pick one up on ebay used for half the price a year or two old, which would still be quite a worthwhile system.
_That is absolutely right. Shockw4ve, Mac's are not that expensive when you think of all the issues you are getting rid off, & like ~piscean]-[delusions "you certainly get what you pay". I would rather be running a bug-free old Mac than a brand new PC. & ~piscean]-[delusions, Adium X is for Mac users -OS X, 10.2 & up-
And some of us have Macs and PCs, and prefer software compatability, so run linux on all their machines.
Just download the latest MacOS tiger release, download pearpc and configure. You'll be running MacOS on x86 arch in less than an hour!
I like Yahoo. MSN has started to charge for the Webcam abilities. Still free on Yahoo. I can't speak for ICQ. Does icq allow file sharing?
