Who's that dude who played drums (conventional, not bongo) with Carlos Santana at Woodstock? If you can find his name, he's my pick for one of the best. Ofcourse, it'd be hard to really classify a best- of- the best.

The best one that I've heard live was Eric Singer at an Alice Cooper gig a couple of years ago. Bonus points earned for playing a drum solo too (nobody dares to play one nowadays because some poptart in the audience would whine about it and write a bad review).

Ringo Starr. I'm just a Beatle fanatic.

I don't know that Ringo is the best drummer or even in the top 10. If you think so, then that's good. Like I said, classifieng a best drummer or guitarist or whatever would take a huge compitition that really couldn't be put together. It would have to be like drumstock, and even then you really wouldn't ever come out with a winner. Anyway, Ringo has this strange charm that I never understood, not just because he's a Beatle, either.

Billy Cobham is as impressive of a drummer as I've ever seen perform or heard.

Yeah, most classic rock and most music in general is in common time, so the beat is 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and (if in eighth notes) but Jazz is crazy. It varies in time signatures so the beats are pretty hard to follow. Certainly
takes a lot of attention to be paid! I play Jazz guitar, but I don't think that's quite the same thing in any sense.

Yeah, and you know what's really creepy? This always happens to me when I've been smoking. I hadn't seen Woodstock 3 days of... in 3 months, and then the morning after I post that it comes on on showtime this morning at 7:00. Shit like that is weird man.

Finally a Medeski, Martin and Wood fan. Do you like Jazz mandolin project?

Idk, it all depends. I can't really say someone is a good drummer untill I've played with them. Some can go really wild and impress people but completely suck at keeping up with a band. This happens alot more with guitarists that drummers though. I saw this one guy though... apearently he was the fastest drummer in the world. He looked pretty good. I'd have to say Tom Jenkins. He's very good at both bass and drums, which gives him an amazing perspective of how a song should come together and sound.
