Never knew Melechesh was a power metal band but their latest album is great indeed. Don't know most of the other releases on that list.

    Overkill - Ironbound

Many metal fans out there if waterboarded would admit that they just want 1980s speed metal to return. Never fear, as Overkill brings us a collection of carefully-polished songs in the middle-period Metallica style, with small elements of Slayer and Exodus worked in. Nothing old but nothing particularly new, just a more experienced ear for songwriting re-approaching these concepts and making a modern version in the older styles

    can you sound more idiotic?

The youth is into metalcore, hardcore ect. Meaning that when the older metal generation dies that is what will rise ;)

That being said, my favorite CD this year was a Canadian metal band "Baptized in Blood" and their self titled release. There was a CD beforehand "Gutterbound" that had some good stuff on it too, but all around this CD is better. I like it because it has the feel of really great older stuff, but has a new sound as well.

They would never have been on the list in a million years though, far too American sounding for the old guard and their dedication to European death and black metal.

Baptized In Blood are a great band. The thrash band that I am in want to be called Laced With Blood, I keep telling them it's too generic but they don't care. What are you're thoughts on close band names? I just made them a half assed logo but it's really not that bad... Aside from the stolen graphics.

Which like all passing trends, will be gone in another five years or fewer...

I will have to disagree with this, its been gaining momentum for years now, which is definitely not the sign of a 5 year trend. Bands like As I lay dying, all that remains and what not opened up the doors and since there have been huge popularity. At least here in North America, and especially Canada, I think a lot of people are tired with older stuff. I cant name a metal head in these parts that are specifically interested in older stuff anymore. The metal kids these days grow up on local talent, because bigger European and American death metal bands usually make a once a year trip to Toronto or Montreal, if that at all. at least here in south Ontario.

@ Captain - If you are an awesome band then you will stand out regardless of the similarity in band names. Like the band Chelsea Grin being a parody of the song "Chelsea's smile" just be careful about the nit pickers who will say "whatever man they just copied so and so". I always think it strange going through my song list and have entire pages of songs starting with the word "kill". That being said, I think to much new talent is throwing "blood" into their names these days. Tell your friends to stop jumping on the band wagon of blood and find something original, bands names have totally raped the "disgustingly awesome" pool, should I start a band, I would be dead set against it, unless it was used in a truly original way.

The band is tight as fuck, I just need to teach them how to get a good sound... The guitarist seems to think all treble and no low end sounds good.... It's funny because his tone is so ear-rottingly bad yet he thinks it's godly.. I always fix his amp when he's in the other room and he comes back yelling "who changed all my shit!" Always good for a laugh though.

They can all shred but they know nothing about the recording process. I have to record their demo in my house which is going to be hell... One of them said to me a couple days ago "we need to practice so we can record the whole album in one magical take".... I shit you not, he was being serious.

They're all so old-school and hard-headed. They probably think my programs are cheating.. Oh well, I could always give them a tape recorder and say "go nuts".

This is my favourite album of the year possibly... Everything disappointed me this year.. I mean I liked some shit but there wasn't any albums I could play the whole way through.

I sort of new that would happen though.... I have a good feeling about 2011

This is the only thing that really grabbed me by the balls.

Five years from now is not five years in total; also, most if not all genres are just modifications of ones that have been around for a long time. You're telling me metalcore is radically different from later Black Flag or Fugazi? Give it up.

I don't think metalcore will last longer than black or death metal. And that's not just wishful thinking :p

I said nothing about it being a paradigm shift from bands like Black Flag or Fugazi, everything has origins, although I dont agree they sound similar most of the time, different feel to the rifts... I just get a lot of die hard metal fans disgusted in Metalcore saying how terrible it is. I just find that its been around and held a level of popularity long enough that we should not dismiss it as a far or terrible music, there are some great metalcore and hardcore bands out there.

Yeah, and that's why traditional metal fans hate it: it's more like the regular crap on the radio, and less like the breakaway that death metal was.

If I wanted to listen to music for mundanes, I'd just get into Ke$ha.

That's definitely not why in this traditional metal fan's mind; I don't like much death metal either.

I do agree to a certain extent with the 'more like the regular crap' but not as much with the breakaway - to clarify =)
I don't care how much metal contrasts with the regular crap -- I mean, I do like some hair metal (Quiet Riot springs to mind) -- but hardcore and metalcore definitely is like the regular crap.

There we agree. I dunno whether death metal was the best example, but there's a "metal-ness" which is different from the regular crap, and metalcore doesn't have it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Even some numetal has it - and most of the numetal bands from the late 90s/early 2000s have definitely lost it.

I can only think to describe it as 'power' or 'impact', and can't in any real musical sense.
