Look, Cat Stevens believes passionately that the U.S. Troops are mistreating some Iraqi civilians & the detainees in Guantanamo Bay etc. that's really not an issue because we know that they are mistreating them because they are denying them basic rights such as access to lawyers, detention without charge or limit of time.
What is objectionable is Mr.Steven's posting a thread of emotive images depicting the U.S. troops as 'bullying' innocent civilians when the photo context maybe something completely different.
Mr.Stevens puts his case so eloquently & charmingly that it almost disguises the 'blurring' of reality.
Matthew has come on & said that this whole genre is a one -sided distortion. An emotively-arousing propaganda presentation.
I agree that the thread was becoming:'one-sided propaganda'.Not interested in the truth but,an angle on the truth.
How about a photo of 'Al Quaeda' (or whatever)terrorists standing behind that poor American contract-worker hostage -prior to his head being cut off?.
Terrorists ,not Muslims, but terrorists who murder in the name of 'Allah' nonetheless.
I do not dispute Mr.Stevens protestations about the U.S. detainees & Iraqi civilians, mistreatment.
I know that the 'terrorists' who regularly suicide-bomb Iraqi's do not wear the light khaki uniforms of the U.S.Army.
The peace-makers do not carry guns or swords.

how's that? if you show just photos, how is that any different, than reporting the casualties, but not showing photos?

territorial soldiers (in the uk) used to be (they may well still be?) dished out a little handbook about various things, amongst the items is a small section about the treatment of civillians. you are also told that an illegal order against the geneva convention is not to be obeyed.
even in war there needs to be laws and boundaries for obvious reasons, go beyond them and you stray into the territory of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Images are powerful imho..and sometimes the context is forgoten.

If you have images AND explanations .. thats ok imho..
Thats pretty much what i have been trying to say.

A image on it's own can be missleading..sometimes.

    Regardless of all that:

Why do you think you don't see people getting cut out of car wrecks ..?.. because it is morbid...and disrepectful.

The way he makes out [explaining himself by saying he is giving one perspective-all others are irrelevant] ALL troops are mistreating ALL Iraqis in their 'care' .

Well thats a proven fact.. we all know that occured..

Even I think the amount of time some have been detained is ridiculous.. but i don't believe it is with out a reason.. 10% of those released go on to join the insurgency.. who that 10% is a mystery.. possibly why they are reluctant to release people quickly...?.

Thats basicaly all i am saying..

I like him, honestly..it's just the way he puts his fingers in his ears and does not listen..that pisses me off.

    Not quite.. but close enough..

    I agree..

Neither do i... it's the distortion that ALL troops are like that.. and because somebodys cheek is being squashed..this is 'torture'.. .. I see worse on a saturday night for christ sake..

Name me a 'peacemaker' for the insurgency or Al-Quaeda.. ?..
MMMMM Thats a little unfair elements of the insurgency have a political arm..and are attempting 'diplomatic relations'..i guess.

    I have heard that..

I fully appreciate baoundaries need to be kept [i'm not a nutter].

Can you see any 'crimes against humanity' within these images ?...

Is anything 'beyond reasonable acceptability' given we don't know all the circumastances ?.

even a cursory glance through what are images coming out of iraq show that the geneva convention is regularly flouted. the americans spend most of their time shooting up the town during their strategic strikes when they're not resting of course. i've seen these kinds of images before - the german advance into eastern europe. i see concentration camps and torture in regular use. i see "pre emptive strikes" on countries. the torching of towns and destruction of civillian infrastructure. the more i see of it, the more i see a an ideological cleansing operation to preserve the ideological purity needed to preserve "order". this is not democracy, this is some dark intention.

YEAH! LETS GET SOME PICTURES OF JEWS BEING TAKEN TO THE OVEN! Oh oh! How about this? Lets post pictures of Americans getting drug behind trucks through the streets! YEAH! Or the beheadings! Oh oh, lets show Muslims cutting off their wives clitorus so she wont be adulterous! Better yet, lets show pictures of the Japanese prisoners who were forced to execute themselves in front of the allies to instil shock and fear! Or how about some lynchings? We all need to see lynchings because ALL white people lynch blacks right? The problem with shit like this (and I'm talking about both of you now) is that you're only showing two extremes... The mediocure gets left out. My friend is deployed right now and he's the gunner on a hummer... He hasn't shot at a single living thing yet and hes been there I think for a couple months now. Why dont we show pictures of him sitting at his post looking BORED AS SHIT? Because of one word people:
    Sensationalism
Now I'm going to be directing mostly to you Cat because your photos can EASILLY be taken out of context. Like the one where the guys on the ground and a tank sits about 6 feet from him. It looks like hes about to be run over doesnt it? Or the one of the familly with the tank behind him. The guy looks like he tripping, but maybe their running for their lives yeah? You act like these are grave travesties when the US soldiers detain someone. But you know what? You watch the American show COPS for 20 minutes and you'll see some niggers (not black people) and white trash in the same fucking positions going through the same shit. And do you know why?
Because thats how you detain a fucking potential threat. I'm not saying that all the US boys are doing what their supposed to here I'm just telling you that your not presenting a good argument for your case using bullshit propaganda tactics like Sensationalism. Yeah its easy to post a squad of recruits holding guns with one detainee... Its a matter of cropping at that level... In fact I would be a little worried to see any authoritarian around prisoners without weapons. Makes me wonder how the fuck they were detained. Now you got our alleged worst, so maybe we would post some of the Iraqi worst. Lets see where they make the suicide bombs... Yeah. I wanna see pictures of innocent childrens body parts from a bomb that was used to kill 4 US GI's and 20 civi's. Because to our extremists, kicking them while their down is ok. To yours, dead children is an acceptable loss. You wanna play the religion card fine, it will only go to further show your ignorance. You wanna talk about religious persecution? I was a satanist for God's sake (pun intended.) You think people smiled at me and said "Well alright thats just fine, all relgions accepted." Its just stupid to believe that you're being disagreed with because your a muslim. I don't agree with the war but I will not stand by and allow you or anyone else to call those men evil tyrants. Not when your wrong

it doesn't take a genius to realise to what's going on. maybe we could rustle up someone here to tell us the war on vietnam didn't happen, that would be ok, or maybe the holocaust didn't happen. maybe cnn can rewrite history for us or maybe we could just burn all historical records and george bush can declare year zero.

sometimes i ask myself this question: who is the greater fool , the fool or someone who listens to one? one to ponder.

Soldier jailed for refusing orders to go to Iraq
    9:32 PM April 13

A British Air Force doctor who refused to go to Iraq was found guilty of disobeying orders by a court martial, and sentenced to eight months in jail.

Australian-born Malcolm Kendall-Smith refused to go to Iraq in 2005, arguing the war was a crime.

He said he considered the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 as being "on a par with Nazi Germany".

The judge ruled that the British presence in Iraq was legal and told the five-officer panel acting as a jury to ignore the officer's arguments.

The case is the first of its kind in Britain over the war in Iraq.

Kendall-Smith sat motionless as the president of the panel pronounced him guilty of five counts, one for refusing to go to Iraq and four for refusing to train and prepare.

As well as the sentence of eight months in jail, the panel also ruled Kendall-Smith will be dismissed from the RAF.

Kendall-Smith's lawyer Philip Sapsford had described him to the court as "a man of great moral courage".

Kendall-Smith holds both British and New Zealand citizenship.

The judge ruled that orders for British troops to deploy to Iraq in 2005 were legal because the British presence was covered by a United Nations Security Council resolution passed after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Kendall-Smith's case attracted the interest of anti-war campaigners, who claimed his views merely reflected a growing body of opinion across Britain that the war was illegal and unjustified.

just seen on optus.net.au, you see - its all legal. the fact that iraq had no weapons of mass destruction (the cause for the war) is ignored. by simply moving the goal posts and simply getting the UN to do what you want it to say, legality is preserved. its a beautiful system , just like launching a war against a country, declaring it not a war and throwing the geneva convention out the window.
