The best traditional metal band, if I had to choose would be Zeppelin, Sabbath or Maiden

all 3 pioneered much that came after. So that's why.

Zeppelin was proto-metal at best, although their debut was DAYUM close. Traditional metal would be: Black Sabbath, Manowar, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, basically any band that stayed on the NWOBHM track instead of going down the thrash, black, death metal one. Bands that are more influenced by Sabbath than any of the others are doom.
