I went out to dinner with my parents for their anniversary, and I think that I made a huge mistake in what I ordered, so now I am feeling quite guilty. I found a lot of things that I could order, for example they had fried zucchini and a huge range of other options, but they had this pepper soup that looked so good (my dad was having some and let me try it). It tasted as good as it looked, so I ordered some without thinking of asking what they use for broth. I just assumed that they used vegetable broth, but I realized later on that I should have asked to make sure that it wasn't chicken broth. I may sound like I am making a huge deal out of it, as my parents think that I am, but I just can't help feeling guilty. I realize that mistakes happen every now and then, but I still feel crummy about it. Has anyone ever went out to eat and have something similar happen?
When I was about your age, I had some soup that had beef broth in it. I didn't know it until a few hours later when I was sitting on the toilet and the only thing I ate that day was that stupid soup. I called the restaurant and asked them what the soup had in it...and that's when I got hte bad news... It happens. We live and learn...and then we always make sure we ask what kind of base they have in their soups... Just be more careful next time
i am sure almost every veggie in the world has had something simular happen. Take a deep breath and realized that it was a mistake, and know that next time you will certainly make a point of asking what kind of broth they use. Live and learn... no point beating yourself up over it!
I agree with the others. It's just a lesson learned, and you will probably always ask what kind of stock is in the soup in the future. Don't beat yourself up about it.
Yeah, i ate scraps of DUCK without realising it was in a meal once...although id kind of expected they guy who is now my ex to have mentioned the fact that im veggie to our hosts, so i didnt think to ask. Then something suspiciously meaty got stuck in my teeth ansd thats when i learnt that it was shredded quackie
Being a vegetarian isn't easy. People are going to think you are making a big deal because to most eating meat is "normal". At least in North America.
I always assume broths are meat, as that is the food industry and cooking standard. What gets me is when it is tomato bisque made with chicken stock. I always ask. Always.
something like that happened to me a while ago... i made one of those english muffin pizza things with sauce and veggie toppings, and i assumed that the sauce was just tomatoes and stuff, but as i was eating it i realized that meat was in it, so i read the ingredients and it had ground beef in it. i could feel all the blood leaving my face and i just froze! i just felt so weird, i cant even explain! but now i read the ingredients on everything.
its like when i accidently got some of my husbands turkey in my mashed potatoes on thanksgiving last year and was sick as a dog for dys....things happen...at least in my case my body purged itself from it, and i am always VERY careful now
I agree with everyone..it happens, try not to worry too much about it and be more careful. I've been vegan for 2 and 1/2 years and things like that still happen to me! I'm constantly discovering products that aren't vegan which i thought were. It's a long journey of discovery.
Aww, it happens. I'm sorry you had to learn to ask about broth the hard way, but to be perfectly honest - you're probably WORLDS less likely to slip up on that one just because you did! ((((((hugs)))))) It was an honest mistake, and nobody's gonna lynch you for what you didn't know about. love, mom
Thank you, everyone. I appreciate the replies. Homeschoolmama, you are right, I am going to be much more careful from now on because of that experience. Thank you so much for your kindness .
I always read or ask about ingredients. Let's face it, most omnivores have no clue what animal products are. For example, I don't know how many times I've been told a soup was veggie, only to realize (upon further and very necessary prodding) that it's base was chicken stock. Since when is chicken a veggie? So nice to find some like-minded people! We are a rare breed. "Eat beans not beings!"
