oh noez a big mushroom fell into the perlite, this mushroom started to grow in the jar so it's fairly large at the moment, it may be mutated it sort of looks a little stupido, what should be done?
is it loose or still part of the cake? just pick it off and rinse it. you won't be loosing any mushroom by picking it off early since the nutrience used to keep that mushroom growing will just be used on other mushrooms
it's still on the cake but it's on the side (since it started to grow in the jar it's sort of curved) should i just pick it? and rinsing it wont ruin it? or should i just make sure i dry it super well?
yeah, just pick it off. like i said, in the long run you won't lose any extra mushroom, and rinsing it down won't cause any problems
I would just scrape aside some perlite under it until the veil breaks. Anything that is stuck to the mushroom should brush off easily after drying it.
Dont pick that till its done. Perlite wont hurt you at all and its easy enough to clean off. Hell, it will probably fall off itself once you start drying them.
hell, i say pick the fucker off. not that it matters either way. i have a theory that smaller mushrooms have higher concentrations of active chemicals so therefore picking mushrooms when they're medium sized will allow the nutrients used on those mushrooms to go into producing new mushrooms, resulting in a more potent yeild when the cake has been spent..
I agree there is a point where it become wasteful to continue to let a fruit body develop, but I disagree with your theory. I makes sense in theory, but not in practice. Amount of nutrients in a substrate does not necessarily determine the amount of fruits bodies or potency. There are many factors that have a larger roll in pinset and potency than available nutrients. The biggest factor is genetics, along with fresh air exchange and relative humidity. Now if you had everything perfect, including a strong isolate, I could see your theroy holding a little more water. I do usually pick before, or right as the veil is breaking though.
this is true. if there was a surefire method or ingredient to use in cultivation for potency increases people would be all over it. unfortunately with multispore its variable every time. true as it may be that smaller mushrooms are more potent by weight, with multispore its a genetic crapshoot and each mushroom varies in potency. even ones that are the same size, stage of growth ect. starting off with good genetics is a surefire way to get consistently good potency. the best way to obtain them is simply to get a few isolates, grow them to fruiting, then test out each one to see which produces the most potent fruits.
