What is it with all this talk about Birkenstock sandals all the time.
All they are is yuppie status symols.About as hip as a sore tooth.
They always have to say,"I put on my Birks, just before I walk into the store".
Why don't they just say sandals?
    Hey phony yuppy hippies?
Most of you never saw Hendrix,
    don't kid anybody
You're just pushing the status quo.
    You're just pushing materialism.
Im sure I,ve ignored many of you when I've walked barefoot into
    a starbucks beceause I needed a coffee,not to impress.
Take you're Birkenstocks and burn them.
    Do us all a favour

I found some Betulas (?) in the mud at Bonnaroo. They're Birkenstockish. And free. What sucks is that I don't wear shoes, so it wasn't such an awesome discovery... but they're in good shape. :D

You could donate those birks to some poor yuppie. Wait a minute, somehow that doesn't sound right. :)

Do you have something against them? I personally do not own a pair but I don't mind people who wear them. I really don't see why it would be any different if lots of people stereotype those who wear Birkenstocks then any other famous clothing or shoewear line? What about those teen stores like Abecrombie and Fitch, what do you think about all the people who wear those clothes? I am just curious because it seems that you are very against these material items.

I see a lot of shoes left on the beaches Monday morning. Most people don't come back to retrieve them either. Most are really nice shoes and sandals. It would be good to just gather them up and donate them to a Church or something.

I think people who wear those Abercrombie & Fitch clothes, and Tommy Hilfiger, and Sean John, etc. are all idiots. They pay huge outrageous prices to wear clothes that advertise for free for the manufacturer! Not only that, but how fuckin' stupid does it look to have the name "TOMMY" written in huge letters all up your leg?!

I wear plain t-shirt type clothes, some with designs, but not with identifiable names or logos. Why the hell should I pay to put the product's name on my clothes so that they are essentially advertised at my expense?! They should pay ME to wear their name like an endorsement. In fact, the only difference between paying to wear their name and getting paid to wear their name is the fact that I'm not a famous athlete!

And what does it prove to wear these name brand atrocities? That I'm wealthy and can afford to overpay for clothes? Or maybe that I'm dumb and gullible and willing to overpay for clothers.

Birkenstocks are said to be very comfortable and durable. I haven't ever worn them so I don't know (and being a barefooter, I'm not in the market for shoes much :p ). Can't really say that I know that Birkenstock wearers are posers or yuppies or whatever. I'm not a poser or wannabe, but I do like to have good brands of certain things, particularly sports or outdoor gear. (I'm a knife-snob, personally.)

    Blue skies,
    -Jeffrey

Ha, I agree with Peacefuljeffrey, people who pay big bucks to wear what the majority of society likes is complete bogus. I would never want to dress like a walking advertisement. Isn't this why "hippies" wear simple or tie-dye shirts? Well, I certainly do (not just for that reason) and I know many people who agree, who aren't considered to possess hippie characteristics.

As far as Birks go, I have tried a pair on and they are quite comfy. Wear what you like, and if it feels good... DO IT!

A little off topic, but there are companies now that are paying people to cover their car completely with advertisements, much like the auto racers do. They pay up to a couple hundred bucks per month. I saw it on CNN. Looks like we will be seeing more of that in the future.

The conclusion is that you should pay less for a big "Tommy Hilfiger" on your chest but you do the opposite, you pay more. What a strange world.

Too bad they cant pay people to walk around nude with advertisements temporarly tatooed onto their body, that would be cool because then the person could go naked, make some money and support a local business. Also with the big flashy advertisement it would take peoples eyes away from things that might offend them as well and maybe with nudity being normal in advertisement, people would accept it being normal in everyday life too.

Speaking of which, in 2002, I was in Key West, Florida on the last weekend of Fantasy Fest, on a Friday (or was it Saturday?). It was October, and I had just earned my pilot's license the month before, and this was my first real trip anywhere since I got my license. I didn't even know it was the week of Fantasy Fest; I found that out when I arrived and the airport was packed with planes.

One thing that was pretty cool about the whole carnival atmosphere down there was there were lots of women around who were completely bare-chested, but who had been airbrush-painted with designs all over their breasts. You had to do a double-take to realize that they were topless! I even have some pictures of a group of men and women who posed with me -- two of the women were topless, and one of them even lifted her skirt to flash some gash for the picture! :D

what im confused about is how birks are stereotyped to be hippyish when they r made of leather. i though hippies r supposed to be against that sort of thing. but what do i know.

I think florida as a general rule usually tolerates that sort of thing, especially when body paint is used. It would be nice to see that around here with all the conservative yuppies floating around quoting their modesty BS.

don't get me wrong, by far i prefer to go barefoot. but when i HAVE to wear shoes, the only ones i've found that i can stand are "birkenstocks." i agree. it's all about comfort. what else can i wear? flip flops? they give me massive blisters. other slip ons have done similarly. it kind of makes me wish i had the $$ to afford "real" birkenstocks... they'd probably last longer than the ones i have now for school. i've had to replace those a few times already.

...so does that make me a jerk in your eyes?

on another note, it seems just as "shallow" to me to obsess over not wearing trendy clothing as it does to collect trendy clothing. i dont get it, why aren't we all just naked?

how about we all just don't focus on all the negative things about other people that bug us. sure i understand the need for a rant now and then, but all the negative thoughts get us nowhere, you know?

if i have to wear anything it's got to be damn easy to wear or i'm simply not going to do it.
