Birkenstocks. Please avoid this word in the future. It's thrown around too much like a status symbol."My Birks" etc. It's not very hip. Mentioning and buying Birkenstocks is just pushing the corporate envelope. The "Am I impressing you?" routine. Too many corporate/phony hippy "Birk" wearing 50+ "profesionals" just love to rub it in your face. They're future lasts as long as a pair of "Birks".A few years. I believe in forever and I won't wear Birks.
Finally, someone with some fucking brains. I see all these assholes at school with these birkenstocks, thinking they're all hot shit. I hate them.
yea the hell with birkenstocks, and nike too, and many others. the hell with corporate america period. i stay away from all major brands, and out of wal mart too.
You might have noticed that this forum is called "OLD HIPPIES". We are just a bit beyond wearing or doing or saying ANYTHING just because it might be hip, cool, groovy, or anything else you want to call it. If we wear 'Birks", it's because we like 'em. 'Kay?
Funny, it seems, Birkenstock believes in forever too. 1774 In a small German village, Johann Adam Birkenstock is registered as "subject and shoemaker" in the church archives. 1897 Johann's grandson, Konrad Birkenstock, develops a concept that would literally change the shape of footwear. Although the soles of our feet are curved, shoes had always been flat inside. Konrad theorized that if the shape of the shoes reflected the shape of the feet, greater comfort would be possible. Soon he designed the first shoe with a contoured insole to be used by shoemakers in the production of custom footwear.
I have birkenstocks, but I got them at a grocery store for ten bucks. Who cares what people wear? Just do whatever the fuck you want & don't prejudge people for their footwear. Bush is the problem. What a douche. I donno, my clothes have no brandnames. I just don't give a shit. I really don't like the idea of some small child in China making my clothing, fingers bleeding. I want to just start to make my own clothes.
i don't have birks, they cost too much and i am poor. i but sandals at walmart and payless. and i have some nomadic state of mind ones that my mommy got me at the roo cuz i ruined my other shoes.......
I don't care what is hip to wear. I want comfort and good quality. I wear Birkies, as my feet got fatter every time I had a baby (four times) and they are the only QUALITY shoes which I can wear and are comfortable. I only have to buy shoes every 3-4 years, and they are really all I wear. A shoe which lasts me 3-4 years is worth 1 $120.00. I only own about 4 pairs of shoes and wear my Birkenstocks about 99% of the time. I am 42 years old and am not going to stop using a GOOD product that I like cuz some whippersnapper has a bizzare reaction to them. YOU don't want to wear Birkies, DON'T. I'll wear whatever I want on my poor OLD fat hippy feet. A LOT of the people on this particular forum are over 50 or nearing 50. I IS the OLD HIPPIES forum.
I wear my birks.....hehe.....well, because they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever tried on, and that is why I wear them all the time. I dont give a crap if the whole world wears 'em or no one wears 'em. I like them and that is all that matters. They are comfortable and easy shoes, and that appeals to alot of people. Whatever.
Welp, I go barefoot most of the time. At home anyways. I do like Birks but honestly I have found that Reef makes some of the most comfy footwear. Like walking on air.
ALL about comfort here...I agree with the others here that are of a certain age...if I like it,I need it, its comfortable and I can afford it..I get it...I just plain flatout DON'T CARE what you wear or don't wear...
What if they start out wearing them as a "status symbol" and then find them so comfy they just keep wearin' em? Anyway, I wear "Birks", and I LOVE them because they are so damned COMFORTABLE. They are the ONLY shoes I have ever worn that didn't make my feet hurt at the end of the day, and I no longer get leg cramps or foot cramps anywhere near what I used to. I used to dance in toe shoes, and I guess my feet reject anything that is too tight because of that.. birks are the only thing that they can stand. I don't wear them as a status symbol at all. Where I live, Birkenstocks are known but they aren't popular, they are viewed as "funny lookin' shoes". I rarely see anyone else wearing them, when I do I am happy cuz I know they are doing good for their feet, but it's cool, it's like Hey! Someone else that wears birks! I'm not alone! LOL I don't think I have EVER seen Birks used as a status symbol here. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty observant. My favorite pair that I wear all the time only cost 30 bucks, I ordered them straight from germany. They aren't even leather anywhere. Most people around here wear shoes that cost way more than my birks did, from stores in the mall. I used to wear the 10 dollar fake ones too, but they still were just like any other shoe.. it has to be actual Birks or my feet will be very upset. Birks as a status symbol? Not from where I sit.
"Birk" fan here. My Mom is a nurse in the OR and *most* of her co-workers where these ugly-ass rubber birkies. Well, they stand for dang near 12 hours straight and it keeps their feet from hurting. When i got a standing job i splurged and got some. The lady gave me a discount cuz they are so ugly!! Now i'm hooked. I brought a pair of sandals with me to Bermuda and i have a pair of clog type at home. I go barefoot as often as i can but when i need shoes it's the birkies for me. I have tried tennis shoes and other sandals (after a bad back injury) and find that they only made my back hurt more.... so it's bare or birkies. It is a status symbol for some i guess.... also you hear people talk about "Birk wearing, tree huggin, granola eatin' hippies". Whatever. Wear what makes you happy peace barefootnikki
i like my birkies....i have had them for a little over 5 years and they are the most comfortable shoe that i own....i wear them cause i like them...not cause i feel that i have too...i am thinking that i will get at least 2 more years out of them...and when i bought them i got them for only 60 bucks instead of the 180 because noone was buying them and they wanted to get rid of them....i prolly would have paid the 180 for them, but then again maybe not....
It's summer now so I'm not wearing shoes alot unless I have to go traipsing through London, in which case bare feet arent a good plan. I got me some good old Birkenstocks for no other reason than they are damn comfy and have lasted me an age. Other than that I wear plain old vintage black boots with a cuban heel, which were my mums and I've managed to look after well.
