What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you see a black person? The reason i'm asking is I'm am black male and sometimes I get strange looks from people of different cultures. Some people judge me as bad without even getting to know to me. I was even told by a few people that I don't act like most black people.(WTF). So what are your thoughts?
Nothing really. I try not to judge a person until getting to know them, just like a person of my color or any color.
When I see a black person I also see his posture, clothes and sometimes already some kind of behaviour. These things probably affect my first judgement more than just that he's black. Don't get me wrong, the skin colour will get some associations as well. For instance if I'm seeing someone in full gangsta style and the person would be white I perceive him slightly different than if he would be black. I try not to kid myself I do not judge at first instance but I do try to not hang any significant consequences on my first associations.
If you act all gangster with all the chains and posturing I'll just roll my eyes. If you appear to be a normal human... nothing, just another person.
In all honestly, CERTAIN black people can be very ignorant. White people, can, too. I have met too many black people I love to judge them all based on first appearance, though.
Politically correct = bullshit and dishonesty Everyone will and does have/make some type of judgement about others based on race/appearance/etc., too say otherwise is bullshit. Stereotypes exist and are often rooted in reality to some degree, sad but true. I usually only have a negative response to those who bitch and moan about being stereotyped, yet seem to do all in their power to support and perpetuate the stereotype. That cuts across all race and cultural strata. Concerning what the OP said about people telling him he doesn't act like most black people I'm sure has to do with cultural upbringing, and his most likely does not fit neatly into the stereotyped pre-conceptions people carry with them.
I am actually quite pleased with some of these responses. People are a lot less PC than I thought. We're constantly bombarded with this PC shit by the "educational" system, workplace and corporate media. White people are made to feel guilty for being white. Black people can be openly racist, but god forbid be white and even make a comment that is slightly negative about black people -- you'd be made to be a complete bigot. This is being done by design by the people in power. They want to divide us and pit us against one another. Everyone must understand this. Also, I think racial identity and pride is fucking retarded to the extreme, but notice every race is allowed to have their own racially-distinguished groups, except white people. Why? Because white people are inherently evil according to the system which NEEDS racial tension and division. This is why I don't fault the worst black people personally. They're a product of the system. Just as brainwashed white people are a product of the system. I notice that almost every race and ethnicity is given what they think is their own culture (nothing could be further from the truth) to embrace. Racism is a product of systematic brainwashing.
Right away i think "Look at that damn dirty, cotton picking, spear chucking, good for nuthin, nigga!" .... JUST KIDDING! I would see a black person the same as any other race. If they dress or act a certain way, then of course i'll see them according to the kind of "label" they have given themselves.
I'm black too, and haven been to different countries so here's my very relavant advice and 2 cents: #1. Don't overthink it too much. A lot of this "different treatment" stuff can be self-brought on, so be careful of what you're assuming from others! The majority of people are going to try and be fair to you, regardless of what prejudices they've been around --By showing you don't care, you can influence others to not care as well. #2. Sometimes, it is true. The black male is still the most discriminated person on this earth. Sorry to those who don't see it, and don't agree. I personally especially hate when I'm in Japan or around other asians (who aren't taught to be as race-aware or guilty about black discrimination as Americans by today's standards), and I get treated differently than white, middle-class college students. I mean wtf I'm in the exact same demographic and no different! This enrages me lol. But these instances are the minority, I've made plenty of friends of all cultures who simply don't give a fucks. :daisy: Plus I get to have dreads, which is an added bonus
People are stupid about race. I find it strange when people say "I'm not racist but" or "It's not PC but" and then just say some shit. It's not edgy. The more someone talks about race usually the dumber they sound.
:grouphug: I know it's left handed comfort, but most people we pass by in life don't even bother to form opinions about us.
