A guy I know, who is apparently fairly experienced at mushroom picking told me to look out for the bluey discharge, as an indicator of the presence of psilocybin. These were cubensis mushrooms. Is this a general rule, or is that only with some species?

There is no "discharge". upon bruising though the mushroom may fade from its original color to blue.

Yeah, that. So is that applicable to all psilocybin mushrooms?

    it should be.

however, not all psilocybe mushrooms will be blue. the colour change is (as mentioned) due to bruising.

I remember someone saying that non psilocybin mushrooms can also be blue, so if you do pick wild mushrooms, be sure to do a spore print.

A spore print? Ive never done one, but a dark purple or black print is supposed to indicate psilocybin. Do your research though, Im about as far from an expert as it gets, go to shroomery.

it depends on the type of shroom you believe to have.. when you research the shroom, you will find what color the sporeprint should be. dont ever go by it being black or purple means its ok. and no, not all blue bruised shrooms are magic.

    Mother nature is tricky!:D

    Excerpt from shroomery.org:

"Pay attention to the text below and you will also notice that some Psilocybe species do not bruise blue. On further mushroom studies you will find that some deadly species from other genera do bruise blue. Just because a mushroom bruises blue does not mean it is safe. Nor that it is hallucinogenic. THEREIS NO ONE SAFE TEST FOR ANY MUSHROOM!"

    ^nicely worded by the shroomery.

blue bruising is likely a good indication that you MIGHT be looking at a magic mushroom, in which case you should attempt proper strain identification.
