I was talking with friends yesterday and one guy said that he will boil his bowl, which makes the resin come off and then he can roll the resin in a ball and get a pretty good hit. But I didn't get to ask him more about it.
Does anyone know about this, I wanted to try it because my bowl is thick with resin, and I need to clean it soon.

    Love CB

I dunno bout boiling it.. but you can just scrape the resin off.. and toke it.. or keep collecting it and make a big resin ball... also, you should always clean ur bowl.. if it starts to get thick with alot of resin

you can boil it, just do it slowely and let it cool slowely.

or shake it in salt and rubbing alcohol. its much easier and gets rid of the resin.

I boil my glass pipe and bat about twice a year, try to scrape out as much as you can first, then use tongs to put it in the water. The peices of resin will start to float to the top, I use a spoon or a small sift to fish them out and then put the resin in a coffee filter to dry. Doesn't taste the greatest to smoke but if you're outta weed, it works in a pinch!

Pipe resin sucks :p It's tar and traces of thc.

Try it if you want. But filling it with alcohol and salt and shaking works well as NoVictim said.

fill (actul bowl) full of water about an inch from the top. lay your pipe in the water face down.

    microwave for 3 minutes

let the bowl of water (leave the pipe in) sit for about 30 seconds. then repeat 2 more times. the last time you let it sit take the bowl of water out (keeping the pipe in the water) and let sit for ten minutes (so your pipe wont shatter do to quick contraction ).

then clean with either thunderblast (you can get this at dollar general) or 420 cleaner (get this at a headshop) and youll have a nice shiny pipe and the resin should be at the bottom of the bowl of water.

CAUTION; DOING HIS WILL TAKE THE COLOR (IF COLOR CHANGING GLASS) COMPLETLEY OUT OF YOUR PIPE SO IF YOU LIKE THE COLOR OF YOUR OF YOUR GLASS DONT DO THIS.

    hope this helps

boiling a bowl will get some or most of the resin off, but i dont like to do it, personally. first of all it will not clean it completely like new, it will come out blotchy with some of the oldest resin being stubborn enough to stick to the inside of the peice anyway. this is my experience anyhow, even when setting aside a whole afternoon strictly for boiling my peices.

then theres the smell. your house will STINK when you're boiling a piece.

but then again you get a lot more resin that you can still use by boiling, because what you get out of the pipe this way will be mostly clumps of resin that will float in the water or sink to the bottom. either way they're seperate from the water. you can skim these off and consolidate it and get several sessions out of it.

but there will also be a thinner, oilier component that will also float in the water, and when you remove the bowl or pour the water out of the pot, the oil will stick to the bowl like a film. on the outside as will as inside. its a minor problem, but an annoyance nevertheless, and you need to reclean your peice after boiling because of the junk that will be on the peice.

it still seems that using boiling water is among the most popular methods of cleaning a peice.

table salt (NaCl) doesnt dissolve in alcohol. the reason people mix the two for cleaning a bowl is that you can then shake it around and people assume the salt is useful as an abrasive agent, helping to rub the more stubborn resin off that the alcohol alone will not take care of. its entirely unnecessary, and will prevent you from being able to smoke the resin later if thats your thing. what i would recommend is to scrape whatever you can out of the bowl initially, then let it soak in high purity rubbing alcohol overnight in an airtight container. give it a few shakes every so often. make sure you dont damage your peice when doing this - being gentle is key. when this is all done, you'll have the resin almost entirely liquified and mixed in with the alcohol/water solution (you cant usually buy 100% isopropanol in the drug store). take a clean glass baking dish and pour the alcohol/resin mix into it and allow all the liquid to evaporate. you can then scrape up the gummy resin and smoke it if you wish. your bowl may need a second soak in some alcohol to get it perfectly clean. dont save the stuff from the second soak. it wont be worth it.

you'll also need to clean the baking dish with some more alcohol to remove what you couldnt get with the razor. this is all just if you want to save the resin. if you simply want to clean your peice, just soak it and dump the stuff in the toilet and get rid of it. your bowl should be sparkling clean :)

personally i love the flavor you get from a well cleaned bowl, but find that it is generally a much harsher smoke. i prefer cleaning the actual bowl of the pipe with a little alcohol wipe like they use on your arm before you get a shot at the dr. it will perfectly clean out the bowl while leaving all the resin on the inside of the pipe where it is. a well seasoned pipe looks prettier and more colorful, and helps smooth out the smoke. a clean bowl allows you to smoke just the pot and not the resin. having a clean bowl with a dirty stem is the perfect combination, in my opinion. i only clean out the inside of my pipes a few times a year, but i clean out the bowlpeice pretty often.

don't boil you're pieces, glass or not. the boiling will weaken you're glass and it will have more of a chance of breaking. boiling will not only strip resin but it will strip paint/coloring of alot of pieces.

i made the mistake of boiling pieces to clean them about an hour before my dad got home from work...BAD MOVE. IT REAKED REAKED REAKED of bud throughout the whole house. My mom, girlfriend, and I had to go throught he hosue sprayin shit and we had to leave the doors open to get a breeze(which sucked cuz we had to post up by the doors so my cats wouldnt get out and it was cold as fuck).
boiling is a no in my book.
good tools for sraping: a sharp, small bladed knife(be careful!), safety pins, bobby pins, pushpins, etc.

glass can take very high temperatures without ruining it. i garauntee that the flame from your lighter will be MUCH hotter than boiling water. the key is how quickly the temperature of the glass fluctuates. if you're boiling your peice, you have to let it cool on its own over about half an hour. don't just put a fan on it or put it in cool water or a refrigerator. that IS very likely to lead to damage. but the peice was obviously formed from MOLTEN glass...who ever heard of carving a peice from a block of glass? no, heat will not weaken the integrity of the bowl, its just rapid changes in temperature that are dangerous.

i still have and use the second peice i ever bought. it's been boiled countless times, not to mention it's fallen from waist level onto sidewalks and come out without any more than a slight scratch (damn holes in pockets!).....if boiling would permanently weaken the glass, this peice would be done for by now, because its thick glass but still not THAT sturdy. its a pretty average good bowl, but it's taken a hell of a beating.

i dont boil it anymore, but boiling certainly hasn't hurt it at all. its been boiled at least a good 10-15 times.

hmm..sounds like a pretty good strong bowl to me. and you're right about cooling rates. i guess it would all depend ont he quality of the bowl. i boiled mine one and the next time i packed a bowl the inner circle chipped. i guess that quality of quantity really applies to more then jsut the bud itself lol.

Yea that's why I have a piece that could knock a hole through a wall if I threw it hard enough and not get chipped.

i failed to mention that your bowl will be pretty shaken up from boiling. i suggest putting a washrag in the bottom of the pot to protect it. if you boil a weaker bowl in a pot without some form of protection, it could chip (possibly just ever so slightly) from the impact of knocking against the metal of the pot you're boiling in. another good bet would be to put a steaming basket in the bottom of the pot and put the bowl on top of that. just make sure its full enough that the water covers both the basket and the bowl.

jointman, while obviously i dont KNOW, i would speculate that your bowl may have received some sort of hairline crack either during boiling without a rag or something or from cooling too fast. this may not have been readily noticible upon first glance, but packing it up could provide enough pressure on a thin glass peice with a crack in it to actually break it.
