I was always taught to break up my bud into shake when smoking out of a bowl (such as you would when smoking a J), because if you break up the bud, you get much higher, and just stuffing a bud in there is a terrible waste. Is this true?

Hmm, I don't really see the difference, except that the smoke may not be able to get through the pipe as quicker when you just throw the whole nug in there, so you might not get as much.. I personally don't see the point in breaking it all up, I just toss a bud in, it's quick and easy..

When you break up bud, there is more surface area to burn, which means more smoke. Thats the way I see it, at least.

Yea but breaking it up doesn't turn it into more smoke. It just seems that way. Either way its the same amount of smoke, same amount of THC, same amount of high right?

Right. Just takes more hits to smoke it.

i think it burns much better resulting in better hits if you break it up. for 14 years i've been smoking and it's always been better for me this way.

its just a habit for me and my friends to break it up, no matter what were using to smoke out of.

I don't see why it would make a difference. It still burns doesn't it.

it burns better if its broken into smaller pieces first because theres more surface area. if you have a twig and a log from the same tree, the twig will burn faster and easier. the wood is the same, but smaller things burn more easily. if you just throw in a bud, it may get all charred up and stop hitting well after a little while. turning it over or breaking it up can help, but you might as well get all of that out of the way at the beginning. this is mostly just a problem for dense weed. fluffy, airy buds should burn whole fairly easily. generally i ALWAYS break up my bud unless its really good and i'm smoking out of a bong/bubbler (and only then because i dont want to handle the buds too much and damage the trichomes)

I break it up to take out any seeds and stems, but I dont use scissors, I just use my hands, I dont cut without rolling a joint, but I do think the stem and seeds should be removed first. They taste awful, and u can save em and make some hash outta em when you get LOTS.

Or you could just buy the hash. Seeds are good for growing, I always keep them because if I can never get that strain again at least I can grow it myself.

I always break up the buds a lot. Actually, when packing a bowl, I usually have a small nug at the bottom just to cover the airhole, then I pack finely broken up weed on top of that. It usually stays cherried throughout the bowl, and smokes really nicely. [IMG]

i second what nesta said. i prefer to break it up for more "surface area" to burn....i seem to get a better high if i break it up. at least in my experience.

Weird, I've never known of anyone not to break up their pot.

I think it depends on what type of pipe your using and what type of weed your smoking. I mean if it has seeds you would be stupid to just throw the shit in there. If you have a glass bowl like a sherlock or a chillum or something breaking it up is probably a good idea. But I do have this little pipe made of stone(d) that burns chunks of nug better than pieces.

i think if you have a bowl thats a conductor of heat. then you should break up the bud. because the more its sitting in there the more its being wasted. from the metal being heated right?

ditto. sometimes, the hole in the bowl is big enought that little pieces might fall through, so just throw a little "stopper" nug in the bottom and you´re set.

though somtimes it´s nice if you have a little perfect bud and to just pop it in the bowl and smoke away. i think it tends to roll a little bit longer that way because it cant burn as fast as if it were finely broken up.

to go back to that twig/log analogy, ever burn sawdust? goes up in a flash because there´s way more surface area.
