Is any one else besides me worried about this global warming stuff man? Why the hell don't we do something about it? Something peaceful, something unexpected, something totally far-out. Well here's my idea man. We need to boycott cars man. Start riding bikes everywhere. Think of it like this. If millions of people stopped buying an' driving cars in the U.S. they'll have to find elsewhere to sell their damn pollution machines man. Then after awhile when they have sat around an' thought about it for a few months or so they'll realise that they need our money an' us to keep them going man. So we state our conditions for the new cars an' bam!! one less major pollution problem in the U.S. man.
It's a good idea to boycott cars or to use them less, but I don't think that we can get enough people to do it to actually make a significant impact on the oil companies' profits. I don't like driving, and I still only have a learner's permit... but in my home city, everything is really spread out, so it would probably be pretty hard to ride a bike everywhere. And our public transportation sucks. But I'll definitely try it when I go home for the holidays. However, the methane and nitrous oxide produced by the meat industry have a much higher global warming potential than the carbon dioxide from car emissions does. So, if you're concerned about global warming, you can eat less meat or go veg, in addition to boycotting cars.
You like the word man don't you My parents don't drive and I do not intend on driving myself (or even learning to drive for that matter) either, so i support you on this - i walk or take public transport everywhere and i love it (i don't own a boke though or i'd ride it)
Cars aren't the problem. The problem is the fuel we use for them. As long as oil companies have a bigger voice in Washington than you or I, this will not change. I live in a rural area where you need a vehicle. I don't think my cat is willing to be harnessed to get me into town. If you want to boycott, boycott the gas guzzlers. This will send a message to the auto companies. And as badly as they're struggling now, they're more willing to listen than they used to be. x
Yeah I see your points. Like I said I'm still new at all this stuff man. Any helpful ideas on how to make this one better are more than welcome. I agree about those gas guzzlers but we'd have to get enough people willing to do it man.
lol. My dog used to pull my sister and me on a skateboard-type-thing, but that probably wouldn't get you into town, either. You could always get a reindeer... P.S. IndyHippy, if you're into non-violent direct action, I have an idea for you. My sister told me about this website she saw, where people put bumper stickers on people's SUVs that say "I'm changing the climate. Ask me how!" lol (If you're worried about the whole vandalism thing, you could put the sticker onto a magnet first so it doesn't damage the car...)
Google knows all. Maybe too much. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=I'm+changing+the+climate.+Ask+me+how&btnG=Google+Search x
They have cars that run on alternative fules, but the oil lobbiest control our government at the moment. Bike for peace!
If anyone actually finds that website, could you post it here? I googled it and I couldn't find it. I think the original website was deleted...
In Canada, the amount of CO2 from automobiles is dwarfed by that of industry. And of course, if there are no cars or trucks, how are you going to get all that great stuff that's shipped on them. Or would you boycott that too? How will you eat? Or this just hare-brained?
We grow our own food man. That's how we do it just like the old time people did. We craft our own neccesities an' we learn to live off the land again.
a)I like my consumer goods b)while we currently produce enough agricultural goods to feed the world (the reason people starve is distributional), this requires large amount of capital. Without urban centres, without cars, we don't have this capital. Which would of course condemn large amounts of people to starvation.
When enough people choose to believe in such ideas they become possible. When those same people act upon those ideas they become reality.
In an ideal world we wouldn't need cars. We'd have ample public transportation to where we could get to where we need to be, maybe have some way of totin' a bike with us, or whatever small hunk of machinery would get us where we need to go with the minimal amount of fuel. Maybe the internet will open more doors too, like we could work from home if companies were compelled to keep us off the roads say, two or three days a week, maybe they get a tax break if they do. Unfortunately, that would be inconvenient, and most of us would lose our jobs if we didn't have a car, plus the oil whores would lose money, 'can't have that. A good compromise might be to have smaller, more fuel efficient cars like they've got in Europe, or have taxes on gasoline that go for the public good, like socialized medicine, like they've got in Europe--but that wouldn't go over too well in the US. Besides, how's a fat ass billionaire supposed to ride a bike?
Yes! Indeed. I went to an environmental conference (Power Shift!) today, and this reminds me of what several of the speakers told us. In activism, you start with awareness, then knowledge, then skills, and then action. You first have to be aware of an issue, then learn more about it, then develop the skills you need to address the issue, and then take action. We're all at different stages in this process, and I think we should try to be supportive of each other, regardless of where we are at this particular moment in time. + lol, they'd probably get someone to ride it for them, just like they get someone else to drive their limos for them.
