China is the first on my list for a boycott for a lot of reasons. China has suppressed its own citizens, most notably in the Tianamen Square massacre of hundreds of students. Currently China supports the Military Junta running Burma (Myanmar). That junta is currently murdering peace loving Buddhist monks and citizens who are protesting against the Burmese gov't. China also has done irreparable harm to Tibet and Tibetan culture, nearly erasing their Buddhist heritage, causing the Dali Lama to flee for his life. Thousands of monks have been de-frocked, monasteries closed, natural resources raped, and so much harm done to the Tibetan people. China is also allowing substandard food and products to be exported to the US and around the world, sometimes resulting in consumer deaths. This is especially notable in the US where millions of toys containing dangerous lead paint have been recalled. China is also planning on taking back Taiwan as soon as it feels it can do so without too much hindrance. The Chinese Olympics are coming next year. We need to urge everyone to Boycott the Olympics. In addition it's a good idea for Americans and the rest of the world to boycott Chinese goods, contaminated or not. China OWNS so much US debt and has such a huge amount of $US on hand, it can do great harm to the US should it choose. If we start a China boycott, it will get LESS of a cash flow from the US and elsewhere, giving it LESS power to hurt the US should it come to that. So let's make China the first Official Boycott from the Hip Forums. Anyone with me? Check EVERYTHING you buy to see if it's made in China. By not buying Chinese goods, you will at least be protecting yourself and your family from inferior, slave wage produced goods. Those also profit BIG US corporations and allow China to continue its repressive policies against its own people and those of other countries like Tibet and Burma! BOYCOTT CHINESE GOODS AND THE OLYMPICS!
BUY LOCAL!!!! That is the first step, an easy one but a major one. support local farmers, go to farmers market, not major chain markets.
I agree entirely. I can't beleive there making the olympics in China, when most of the people should know at least half of what your said!!
I feel that chinese goods should be boycotted, but in objectivity, I have to say that there are less occurences of chinese origin food causing food poisoning than those from the u.s. it's something like 2% of total exports from china <which is huge, don't get me wrong> and something like 8-10% of u.s. exports Food should be bought and grown locally, and only transported if it is something you cannot get locally, and lets be straight about that, with modern tech most things can be grown most places if you are willing to put the effort into it, out by tonopah <nevada, desert> there is a freakin' lobster farm Chinese exports across other categories do have a higher rate of occurance of other happenings, and should be scrutinized, and boycotted until such scrutiny is in place.
I also negelected to mention that China also CENSORS this website, blocking access to millions of Chinese. The block isn't nationwide, just some areas that are highly monitored. But it doesn't block Chinese spammers from CONSTANTLY coming here posting up ads for everything, esp. Nike Shoes (I guess we should boycott Nike too!) Don't worry I've already taken that problem into my own hands by blocking huge chucks of China's Internet from reaching this site (to stop spam). Tit for fucking Tat! But the fact that China is so slow to regulate its industries and is so corrupt most illegal activity is ignored for profit. Yes, China is quickly becoming a MODEL CAPITALIST COUNTRY, but one where democracy doesn't exist. And as our democratic freedoms disappear one by one, what you see happening in China, is happening here too. China has learned the lessons of Capitalism all too well. Now they are corrupt, profit driven, competitive, aggressive, rich, powerful and very, very dangerous... Just like America.... Ah for the ol' days of Mao... I recently went to Chinese knick-knack store in San Francisco. Saw Mao's little red book (it is very small, fits in the palm of your hand). The paper was so cheap you could read the otherside right thru it. Probably cost 10 cents to print...and they wanted US$22 for it.... Mao must be rolling over in his grave.
theres a book out that chronicles a familys boycotting of chinese products for 1 year. its called , a year without"made in china". i guess its almost impossible and very expensive to do so. seems even many things that were made elsewhere still have components from china. some things like a coffee maker are only made in china, etc.
Yes, globalization is a great THEORY, but when put in practice in a world where new wars break out every year, being dependent upon a country that could tomorrow be your enemy is extremely unwise! Any country that is still self-sufficient will survive far better than one that imports everything like this country. We've exported most of our manufacturing industries, so we make so little here any more. We've also lost skilled labor jobs to other countries, so we don't even have the skill to make things that we used to make. Without the capacity and skills to make things for ourselves, we could become a third world country almost overnight, should China decide NOT to export to the US, as would be the case if hostilities increase. So by Boycotting China now, we prepare ourselves for a worse-case scenario down the road when we can no longer get Chinese made goods. So that's another good reason to boycott China.
The most difficult and costly part of the boycott would probably be the clothes. You may say a computer or this or that, but people don't need the newest toy or gadget. But if you get your food local, you often save, actually, in my experience. At least where I am. Plus you eat healhty if you work towards a farmers market type lifestyle, with many fruits and veggies!! use what you save on food to get clothes locally made. or buy from the salvation army at least, they have pretty decent clothes, just wash em two times. other than food and clothes, the only reason people bitch is cause they can't have their latest toy that they don't really need, except to feel accepted.
I just checked for shits and giggles. surprisingly, quite a few of my nice shirts are made in India. Just as much as China.
Anyways, I think it is good that people know where there stuff comes from anyways. I checked a lot of the clothes I commonly wear (minus boxers, though I think those are mostly from Thailand in my case). Electronics will come later. But I really am just curious anyways. Maybe we can compile a huge list for shits and giggles, I bet there would be a few countries we didn't expect: Philippines 1 Indonesia 3 India 3 El Salvador 1 Macha 2 Hong Kong 3 Korea 1 Malaysia 1 Bangladesh 1 China 5 Thailand 2 Cambodia 2 Sri Lanka 2 (one hand me down) Vietnam 1 Columbia 1 Myanmar 1 Mexico 1 Nepal 1 Almost everything from Asia, minus Mexico, El Salvador and Columbia. I am not surprised by that. I guess a few of the countries did surprise me, I expected to find way more Chinas.
What the fuck is Macha? Machu Picchu? It's a GOOD thing most clothes aren't just from China. Chinese using formaldehyde in cotton products. I bought a pack of underwear from China when I was in Australia. The stuff smelled so awfully chemical I had to throw it away. It didn't even dissapate slightly after repeated washings! It was only a couple of years later that we were warned about this problem! But far worse than what we get exposed to is what Chinese workers are exposed to! They live in some of the worst polluted cities in the world. They work long hours for low wages (sometimes as slave labor), in horrible conditions that we would never subject Americans to. They are abused by their employers, exposed to all sorts of toxic chemicals daily at work. Then they get to go home (if they're lucky), and purchase all these products for themselves and eat sometimes toxic foods, drink toxic water and breathe toxic air. One day the Chinese people will have ANOTHER REVOLUTION, this time against their own CAPITALISTIC gov't. Then perhaps Americans will finally figure out that they too need to have a new revolution!
Mercantilism died out a long time ago. And I also find it funny that you want to punish China for holding too much of your debt. It's such scapegoating. If you don't want debt, don't run a deficit.
No, if you don't want Chinese to have your debt, STOP buying things from China. No US$ inflow, No debt purchasing. The only reason they buy it is cause they have to do something with the TRILLION US$ they have, don't they? Buying US debt HELPS the US finance buying MORE SHIT, and MORE WARS. This is NOT what the US needs right now. We need to keep our DOLLARS here, pay off our debt (as we did under Clinton), strenghtening the US dollar. The Euro right now buys 1.423 dollars, a record. The dollar is LOSING VALUE every day, which Corporate America just loves, but raising the cost of living for every American.
You don't know what it is because I spelled it wrong, my bad. It is Macau. " The Macau Special Administrative Region, commonly known as Macau or Macao, was established on December 20, 1999, as one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the other being Hong Kong. For 442 years it was ruled by Portugal, making it the oldest European colony in the history of East Asia." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macau So a boycott of China also would entail a boycott of Hong Kong/ Macau made items.
In tunisia people buy basically local food, but It's goonns be hard to boycott other goods, because elmost everything is made there. In tunisia we really produce stuff that we sell expensive and wich are not really good quality. Personally I can start boycotting these things, most of them are made by harmless things for nature, but I'm not sure how to convice the rest. They basically don't have much of a choice. chinese goods are less expensive and with a much better quality.
Yes, it won't be easy to boycott all things Chinese, esp. in smaller countries where few products are made, and so many things come from China. But if you examine each purchase you are considering, see if it's made in China. Then look if there is an alternative. If not, then think, do I really need this item? Lots of times its just something you want, not something you NEED! As we've seen clothes are made all over the world, so there's no reason to buy Chinese clothes. Most small, cheap plastic items are made in China. But guess what? Many of those same things are made in Taiwan! Perhaps it might be worth a few minutes of our time to inform the MERCHANTS who sell goods originating in the PRC, to try buying from Taiwan or other Asian countries instead! They might not have a choice, but they can ask their DISTRIBUTORS/IMPORTERS to source their products from other countries too. To have a successful boycott we'd need to INFORM Merchants, Distributors and Importers that we're NOT GOING TO BE BUYING anything made in the PRC! That's advance warning to them to cut out those purchases, otherwise they will be STUCK WITH THEM! It's really too bad we can't rely on Corporate America to police China's sweatshops. We've just recently realized what a POOR JOB they do in China because all they care about is PROFIT! So by hitting them where it hurts in their PROFITS, a boycott can be VERY successful. Remember the GOAL of the boycott is NOT to paralyze China's imports, but to CHANGE the way China does business with the world and especially its own people! The lack of true freedoms and democracy must be addressed. Tibet MUST ONCE AGAIN be a FREE Country! Burma MUST stop the violence against pro-democracy protesters! China must CLEAN UP ITS ACT AND ENVIRONMENT! As a CONSUMER WE ALL HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WAY THE WORLD DOES BUSINESS!!! POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
I loath human repression just as much as anyone else does. However, the problem I have with boycotting goods from a particular country is that you hurt people at the bottom of pile the most. As for the quality of goods coming from China, to be fair I would have to say it is variable but defiantly an improvement over say 25 years ago. A couple of decades ago the quality of manufactured goods coming form Taiwan and South Korea was mediocre. These days the quality of manufactured goods from these two countries is as good as coming from anywhere else. Back in the 1930’s Japan also had a reputation of producing shoddy goods. It was not until the 1960’s that they started to earn a reputation for quality. These days if you do buy something labelled “Made in Japan” there is a fair chance that much of the labour intensive components have been outsourced from China. From what I have been told China is not a nice place to live. They have less fresh water on a per person basis than Yemen does and very poor quality air in the industrial areas. Having said that most of China is still rural, third world country, the factories are concentrated to just one area of the country.
