I remember a friend in a similar situation years ago. She went to a lactation consultant who said that one of the differences is that it's easier to "pull" from the bottle. I remember that she switched to the low-flow bottles, and a breast-shield for the first few weeks, but that by her babies' first month he was nursing like a pro.

    Good luck - and congratulations!!!
    love,

My son had a bit of difficulty latching on in the first week or so. I just persevered, and now he's doing it perfectly. Don't give up. I think some babies just take a little longer to learn how to do it.

It is much easier for a LO so get milk from a bottle then breast. Which is why they get nipple confusion so easily. Hold your baby in the nursing postion. Use your dominate hand to hold your breast. you want to tickle his mouth with your nipple. This will stimulate the rooting reflex (where he opens his mouth looking for the breast) When he does this pull him in to your breast with the other arm he is cradled in. It may take a few trys. Just keep at it. Remember there are 2 of you who have to learn this. It is completely possible to relactate at any time. There are adoptive moms in my circle who have done so.

If this doesn't work there are other thing you could try.

I would check out these videos. They really helped me out when I started breastfeeding. DD is 13mnths now, and we're still going strong. Kellymom.com is also a great breastfeeding resource.

The reason your baby is resistant to the breast is because it is way more work to get milk from the breast than a bottle. Try pumping until you have a let down, and then try latching the baby on. Then it wont be as much work. I would really advise against the sugar water thing. That could cause you and babe to develop thrush, since yeast really like sugar. Besides, breastmilk is sweet enough(toddlers will tell you its better than ice cream), just leave a few drops of breastmilk on there for the babe. GL!
