so, i know bright eyes is primarily associated with dark emo depressing and all that...but seriously if you haven't given bright eyes a chance, i think you're in for a big shock...maybe a few of their earlier albums have that dampened feel but download: devils in the details, a song to pass the time, poison oak....to name a few.

i consider bright eyes folk so maybe there's another forum but if anyone else shares interest...

ive listened to him before. His songs are pretty catchy. Theres a lot of potential there but i don't think most of it will come together. He strikes me as a very self destrctive person. A friend of mine saw him in concert and he was so drunk he passed out like 3 times. His roadies had to keep him up. But yeah, hes ok

I think Bright Eyes is really good, for some reason I got into them even though SOME of their (his) songs are hard to listen to..

some of my favorites, however, include

    The Center of the World
    A Perfect Sonnet
    Lua
    First Day of My Life
    Happy Birthday To Me
    Waste of Paint
    Well Whiskey

if you feel like giving Bright Eyes a shot, these are the songs I'd listen to :) I think they are all good.. I even like some other stuff but it gets sort of depressing especially to have it be one of the first songs you hear by them.. lol

i guess the depressing(ness) of the lyrics come from the brutal honest and should be looked as an experience to grow off of. for anyone who has felt daily anxiety or depression and can stand a melancholy reverie...check out the albums "fevers and mirrors"(an album of being unsettled and self examination)....i was just going to go through and describe the albums but that seems tedious so...just o get you head spinning check out:
"Lifted or The Story is in the Soil"
    "Im wide awake, It's Morning"
Digital Ash In A Digital Urn"

theyre all specifically wonderful...with the right mindset

I HATED bright eyes when I first heard him.
But I liked the lyrics. I listened and listened now Conor Oberst is my favorite artist. His voice is shakey and real. His words, powerful. Sometimes the songs are very low and sad but who, in life, doesnt feel low and sad sometimes?
Everything thing about his music is perfection and my eyes.
Bowl of Oranges is really upbeat and happy, its good to listen to if you havent heard him before. <3

This is not emo at all. Oberst comes from alt-country roots. Emmylou Harris, Jenny Lewis, etc. work with him. I don't know how he got hijacked by the "emo" label. Because he writes personal songs?

So I guess that means Metallica is emo.

i just got the chance to see bright eyes for myself recently an i can say... fuck this guy.

there are so many bands that are better to see live than this stuff. by all means it was ok.
    thats all it was.
    hes got fine studio work.
but there are at least 40 bands that I could list off at request that are better than him live-wise.
An many of these other bands have the same intellectual message that he tries to portray through his "indie" folky sound.
Not trying to offend anyone. Just speaking my mind.

I'm indifferent when it comes to conor, I really respect him as a musician and think he has immense talent. Also, I really enjoy some of his songs. Howevr, he has also brought out ALOT of crap.
