At the risk of alienating some of you (as I did b4), I once again bring up this issue because it's again in the news, and as a lot of you seem to LIKE Tony Blair, you really need to read this and reflect upon what your country has become, and what might happen in the near future... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=461611&in_page_id=1770
I used to think this whole big brother state was all nonsense but when you look at it.. christ.. they're taking away alot of our civil rights ;/
Trying to be fair Skip I'd propose that it has nothing to do with Mr Blair nor the Labour party, I am sure the exact same strictures would of occured with the Conservatives in power. I don't recall any fights in our parliament over the introduction of all these powers, all parties seem keen to adopt the principles of mass control. Now what anyone can do about it is the real and pressing question as I'm sure there will be no mass uprising and perhaps would say there shouldn't be.
I wouldn't say a lot of us like Tony Blair... perhaps one or two of the conservative idiots who frequent these boards, but they are just a vocal minority. I think the general consensus is that Blairism is Thatcherism with a makeover, I seem to remember when I made a poll about Tony Blair we voted overwhemingly that he was on balance a "****". Mostly because of the FIVE wars he's dragged us into during his time at Number 10 and predominantly because of the catastrophic mistake of Iraq, but we've discussed a lot of the new powers mentioned in that article in different threads on ID cards and CCTV as well.
One of the problems that isn't related to politics is the realization that if they CAN do it, they WILL do it. New technology makes much of this spying feasible, economical and reliable. So there is every incentive to implement it in a climate of FEAR. So yes it's easy to say a different gov't under similar circumstances would do this. In fact the Dutch and the Americans have adopted the same technologies and put them in place. But at least the Americans haven't done it on a national level...yet. I believe however that the idea prevailing in the US & Britain among corporate and political leaders is that business can do no wrong. So if a business comes up with a new way to spy on private citizens, the gov't encourages and contracts with them for their technology, without regard to the erosion of civil liberties. With so many young tech-heads now trying to position themselves in gov't they will almost always advise on the side of technology over freedom, because they haven't ever been deprived, and don't have a clue what they're really doing to everyone. And the elders who should really know better, allow this to happen in the name of security, out of the FEAR MONGERING that has taken hold of our gov'ts.
Skip, I hope you were being facetious about saying a lot of us like Tony Blair, but I agree with Dap to a point that this type of opression, and it will become totally oppressive, has been creeping in for over a decade, becoming more and more sophisticated and intrusive, and I have been crying out against this for about that length of time. People aren't really concerned at present because they cannot feel or see the consequences of such laws. Jay (Crucified Dreams) posted an article about the british youth and it reads so negative that it is seducing people that we need these measures to overcome the ills of society. Never mind when innocent kids who have committed no crime are having their fingerprints, DNA and photos taken in some sort of school awareness workshop with the Police and become logged on a national database. Again very soon having nothing to hide, nothing to fear will make no difference because we will be told what to do and that'll be that. This country, unlike American is still governed by the landed gentry. The House of Lords has until recently changed its elected system to that from being a hereditary birth right to people gaining the right through merit, and its absolute shit but for me its still feudal or a some sort of pseudofeudal system. Now they are creating systems that will allow the very few to passify the majority of society, after all they have been successful in doing so for nearly a thousand years. The excuses now for many of these changes are for the fight against terrorism. Let's be honest, we faced a greater threat from the attacks by the IRA then any that are being proposed today, and if we had not gone into war against Afganistan and Iraq there would be no threat of terrorism therefore no need for carpet survaillance, ID card systems and powerful laws that can detain you for weeks without charge and monitor you by telephone and spending power. I 've said this once in an earlier thread but this country could most definately take a leaf out of the book of France. I only have some consolation that when it truly becomes suffocating I'll be an old man waiting to die, I just pray for those who are in their twenties and younger.
I think the guy is talking utter bollocks and I have said that on his myspace page - though ofcourse he has the right to say what he thinks. http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=237584 I like Tony Blair for all the errors he has made he has also done some good. Do they outweigh each other ? only time will tell. ''Big brother'' ? ''My ass''
Yeah? What good has he done? I've yet to see any real progress in Britain other than the rich gettin' richer.
Hasn't he introduced: minimum wage, tax credits, Sure Start, improved recognition rights for trade unions, much progress tackling homelessness, low unemployment and a strong economy? Also, I think Blair has brought the knowledge of Global Warming to a whole new perspective that wasn't around prior to 1997.
People who say "wooo I honestly didnt realise " are either rank stupid or dont actually have any cognitive senses. How can you have watched stuff on the news or read it in papers without actually just oputting together an overall picture of what each peice of legislation is for. In actual fact you dont have the right to go outside your front door as of 2009 !!! fucking well wake up you dozy bastards and get on the street and riot about this !!! its your last chance before they also bring in a ban on using language which suggests you might be against parliamentary democracy !!! which as we all know is merely party political dictatorship - its all going to culminate in you paying to support those parties wages and election campaigns - and complain and you get locked up without trial we are merely 4 peices of legislation away from that scenario being real !
sadly the uk and the usa are indeed on its way to a big brother police state " just hope the uk police are"nt as trigger happy with their soon to have taser guns as the usa police are............. (people will be dropping like flys when pissed on a saturday night out in town ) imagine it freeze motherfucker or pc plod would probally say oi you stand still or your gonna get tasered ( i can hardly stand up yer daft bastard never mind stand still whats the charge officer ? ) about 20 thousand fucking volts ..........i always thought pigs thought they were bright sparks and the stupid cunts actually believe it themselves now ........... stay away from meat wagons and people wearing funny hats man .
Granted these policies have been addressed by the Labour party but when we begin to look at these in detail what we are seeing is a payment that is subsistance living; tax credits that are compilcated to assess and are made difficult to apply for, then you begin to realize that they are just another benefit that has been re-shaped and re-named. Yes, trade unions by law have to be recognised by business but given no real powers like the ability to strike with force and negotiate with strength but the right to join a union in a democracy is what you would expect anyway, just that it was lost under the tories; low unemployment that has benefited from the re-shaping of support as in tax credit, income support at a level that is impossible to survive on never mind live an extravagant life and almost impossible to claim, not that you expect someone to live any other way; a homelessness issue that isn't just confined to London but enjoyed by the provinces that, even under the tories was none existent, only now they are less visible by shipping the problem out to the provinces; and a strong economy that has attracted countless millionaires and billionaries that is only matched by nations states regarded as tax havens. Oh yes, we also boast the highest working week, depression and teenage pregnanacy rate, greatest wealth and poverty divide and one of the highest suicide rates in Europe, great for the 4/5th wealthiest nation on the planet. You maybe right, we should all get on our bikes and look for a job like Tebbit said. How wrong he was. Unions smashed under Tories as in the miner's are now ruing the day these industries were closed down when you see the likes of NPower discussing new and exciting ideas of coal powered energy plants to bridge the problems of buying energy from Russia. Yeah, we have a lot to be thankful for. Payment rates rise increases for the majority of people lower than inflation and much lower than the cost of living rise, so most of those/us who are working are seeing our wealth decline instead of improving. I do know some of these issues/policies are a legacy created by the Tories but again they have be maintained by Labour under the direction of Blair who looked to Thatcher as an inspiration. And as for Global warming you re right there has been a lot of discussion around it that has made it news worthy. Who is going to pay for it, the businesses that is generating it? I guess not, it'll be the poor sod trying to get by recycling the junk mail, packaging and wasteful and meaningless marketing and the plastic bags generated by them; driving a car that they just about afford to get to and from work because public transport has been cut back in effiecency drives to creatre profit for shareholders even though it enjoys public subsides. But at the sametime everyone wants to live in a bigger and grander house, most public buildings and structures are lite up like Christmas trees, as with the motorways; it just smacks of bullshit and hypocracy.
I can't really argue with you there, because I honestly don't know enough about politics. So has Labour actually progressed since the Tory's irrelevent of if they've done policies with some flaws in them? Oh, one thing I do know though is that your point about suicide rates is wrong. We actually have one of the lowest suicide rates in the Europe. We come 60th out of 100 countries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate
Britain has one of the highest suicide rates in Europe. Each year in the UK over 5000 people take their life. The Samaritans estimate that in the UK there is a suicide every 82 minutes. The charity Depression Alliance estimates that each year there are around 19,000 suicide attempts by UK adolescents whilst more than 2 million children attend GP's surgeries with some kind of psychological or emotional problem. http://www.samaritans.org.uk/ The figures, for the years 2001-3, show big variations between member states. Middle-aged deaths from cancer are most common in Central Europe, while suicide rates are highest in the Baltic states. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5191386.stm Granted we can find statistics to back our respective arguments but I'll concede that as in comparrison to the likes of Finland, Norway and the other Scando countries we do lag. Not that it's something we should be boasting about all the same, but suicide is very high here even gauged against other countires.
Hmmm...Can I vote on who get Deported? No? Fuck.. Still, Why is it everyone seems to want to take our freedoms...
No, dare I say it but you're probably right in a way, just depends what stats you're reading, the ulitmate point is: "That suicide is painless, It brings on many changes and I can take or leave it if I please. I try to find a way to make all our little joys relate without that ever-present hate but now I know that it's too late, and..." ":drummer: Give me enough rope and I will.
