I knew there was a huge conspiracy by Bush & Karl Rove to control the media, but now it's finally being revealed as the most UNAMERICAN, Unpatriotic war on journalism ever launched in the US. It put's Hitler's propaganda machine to shame. And it's criminal because attacks on the media have taken the form of outright murder by the Bush Administration (attacks on Al-Jazeera in Baghdad & Kabul). Recent revelations have shown how the media has been completely compromised over the truth about the Iraq war. Critics of Bush have also come under constant assault by right wing media, orchestrated by no less than Karl Rove himself. Read the REAL story here. http://www.digitaldivide.net/blog/TimKarr/view?PostID=9013
This is a great article, Skip...I've known it was true, but haven't found any references quite as clear as this. It amazes me how the press keeps on saying that the troops want to "stay the course" in Iraq and finish the job. Yet, friends of mine that have relatives and friends in Iraq tell me how low the morale is there, and how badly the troops want to end it and come home, how overwhelmed they all are...well, who ya' gonna believe??? The real people here saying to us all, face to face, "Bring the troops home now!" It is time!!
Good article indeed...it really shows the true side of things. I do think though that despite the media blitz and propoganda, there is a groundswell of people in the US seeing the truth pretty clearly now...despite the neo-con's best efforts to the contrary.
I'm really hoping everyone will learn a valuable lesson in this debacle. You can't have democracy and control the press at the same time. And you idiots republicans don't need to tell me the US isn't a democracy, because it is by definition. Democracy MEANS freedom of the press, which is ingrained in our Bill of rights. But apparently a certain president hasn't bothered to read the fine print in that document. I hope it really comes back to haunt them and every individual who has broken the law will be put in jail and never see daylight again. Thousands have died as a result, and we are now in an intractable, unwinnable war thanks to the way the press in the US has been muzzled ever since 9/11.
It's an interesting revelation that the US military is employing soldiers to write articles which are then placed in newspapers in Iraq by a civilian contractor who gives cash payments to the papers to include their "news". So these stories are not written by journalists, but by propagandists. By paying for placement of this propaganda as news stories the US has undermined freedom of the press, corrupted the integrity of news organizations, and destroyed US credibility. And that's just in Iraq. So it begs the question of what Bush's minions are doing in the US itself. A clue comes from the criminal case against the former head of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting who is accused of abusing his position to advance a conservative agenda within the CPB. He's also accused of embezzling funds for his own use, but that's just your typical republican corruption, nothing new there. Of course all the GOP apparatchiks in the CPB have managed to alter the editorial & programming content on the Public network to avoid any criticism of the Bush Administration and to slant programming towards the conservative point of view. With all this high level coordination of propaganda going on in the Bush Administration, all the money being thrown at this, and the inclusion of military personnel in propaganda activities, one must wonder what else this administation is up to... Perhaps it can explain why people on active military duty appear regularly on liberal websites, like this one, to disparage views that don't conform to the Republican party line. If military personnel are assigned propaganda patrols, there are no limits to where they can spread it via the net. So is that the truth? Where are they on this thread? Why no replies from our usual suspects? Makes me wonder...
I might also point out that anyone who is indeed here as ordered thru military channels is probably breaking American law, not to mention compromising their own ethics (oh that's right their ethics are amputated during boot camp). Perhaps with these revelations & indictments people who are under such orders will think twice and question them. Is military & political propaganda actually being placed on free-speech and other liberal websites? Is it being paid for by US taxpayers? If so then you are doing yourself, your country and democracy a great disservice, and if you are indeed a freedom loving person, and a patriot you will confess your crimes and turn the tables against those who force you to break the law. Information warfare is justified in certain circumstances. But to direct it against your own people, or those who are not "the enemy", is to attack those people, and it will work against your goals once it's been revealed. Conspiring to mislead the American people in a time of war is very serious business. I'm looking forward to more indictments, and you can be sure it'll be the footsoldiers who take the fall for their leaders, who will all be pardoned eventually.
You lost all credibility (at least to me) by putting the US and the Nazi's in the same paragraph. Please, I can go outside right now and buy a sticker that has President Bush's face on it that reads "This guy is a moron" - if this was anything like the 3rd Reich or if it "put Hitler's propoganda machine to shame" you would never be allowed to ever sell anything like that and would be hauled in by the secret police for even suggesting it.
So no comment about the subject of this thread, Bush's war on Freedom of the press? What's the matter? I guess it must be true then.
Skip--you know as well as I do ,nothing is off limits to these repubs. The subjugation of all peoples, the control of all resources, methods of production, freedom of movement,on and on--it 's all on their agenda. And they are slowly winning. They don't mind taking a few steps forward---(1994 contract on-well--us)and then a few steps backward(now--war,Katrina,indictments coming out ,)ect. But the bastards are always there --waiting--waiting--to bust unions, veto vets benefits, cut social programs that harm the ones who need them, lie to "we the people",thru' control of the media ,whatever. They've always been there.Years ago,I really hoped the repubs would gain complete control of the government--all three branches, just so the American people would get a chance to see what these fuckers really believe and what they would actually do.Well, here we are.Fantastic isn't it.Unfortunately, for those who are too comfortable to SEE--and have lost the desire and/or courage to know how it all runs--HERE IT IS!Take a look!Equally as unfortunate,we now know that(with few exceptions)the democrats are mere window dressing.Laff riot ,eh?
good question (for a change). But you SHOULD already know the answer. First of all Iraq is a big country and supressing all the news coming from there is beyond the scope of the US military or any conspiracy. Second, the REAL news about Iraq is much worse than you or I know, because we are not on the ground and news IS being censored by the US military. How? Well few if any reporters are allowed out on their own. If they go by themselves not only do they risk their lives due to the lack of security in Iraq (thanks to the US invasion), but they are apt to be attacked by American troops as happened already to a number of independent journalists, or kidnapped by "terrorists" (some of whom might actually be CIA). The only reporters authorized by the US to be in Iraq are those who are embedded with the military (and that DOES mean in bed with them, telling only their side of the story). The US does have to report casualties, and that is a big part of the bad news that can't be repressed. Most of the other bad news coming from Iraq is a result of the activities and submissions to the media by the insurgency and Al-Qaida. The US can't control these (much as it would like to), so if it wasn't for Al-Jazeera receiving and broadcasting the messages from the "enemy", we would all probably believe that everything is nice and friendly there in Iraq. Car bombings are something the media can't miss especially when it happens outside their hotel. The truth is the US controls virtually nothing outside the green zone, the oil installations and it's own bases. Iraq is complete chaos, and any other report is a lie. So if the US left Iraq today, virtually nothing would change except the Green zone & bases would be empty, and the target of Iraqi hate would be gone. Oh, yeah, I suppose the US would lose control over Iraq's oil, something Cheney will never allow as long as he's in power.
Yeah, I had the same idea, that by having their way, the republicans would fuck up big time, and their day in the sun would be abruptly ended by scandal, indictments & jail time. And America would see the corrupt hypocritcal morality of the Republicans and vote them out once and for all. But like you say, the Dems don't offer much of an alternative, but right now the stage is PERFECT for a third party or several alternative parties to gain a lot of power and undo the two party system at last! Unfortunately this administration has created a legacy of debt, military involvement, loss of international prestige and world instability that will take generations to undo, if it is even possible to achieve.
Yes, it's sad what they've done to this country in a few short years. What's sadder yet is that we're not in the streets by the millions showing them how we feel.I love this country--we could and should be the best.I'm ashamed of what they do in our names.Hopefully, with elections coming up,we can take remedial action. The pendulum always swings back.
our usa press is completely controlled by the wicked bush machine. they only tell us what they want us to hear. ever seen the movie "good morning viet nam" with robin williams check it out they lied to us in the 60's and 70's too about the viet nam war. hippiewise angel POWER TO THE PEOPLE
I wonder what the Kurds or the Marsh Arabs would say about the security situation before the US invasion. I wonder what the families of the THOUSANDS of Shia executed at Abu Ghraib would say.
Perhaps much the same as the families of THOUSANDS of innocent Iraqis dragged out of their homes by our forces to be indefinitely imprisoned and tortured at Guantanemo, Baghram and countless other lesser known facilities. Im sure they're praising Allah for our "liberation".
Actually, large sections of the country are stable, including the Kurdish regions (where pictures of George Bush are often proudly displayed) and many Shia areas. Looking at the areas where British troops are stationed, "complete chaos" is obviously a ridiculous exaggeration, the troops there don't even wear helmets. I believe the Marsh Arabs in the south are also living in relative peace.
Ooh run and hide behind your Kurd argument again (as always) as if the Kurds who represent less than 17% of the total Iraqi population are the justifiers of illegal transnational aggression by Washington. Best start advocating invasion and regime change in Ankara as well then, Kurds don't fare well in Turkey. What/whom individual Kurds choose to revere is their own business (and stupidity)and most assuredly not an overwhelming endorsement for the present band of presiding puppets in Baghdad. The wanted embezzler and source of most of the prewar false "intelligence", Chalabi, and his CIA asset cousin Allawi are indicaters enough of Washington's myopia in ME affairs in that regard. Keep evading your civic duty to hold our OWN government accountable, Pointless, you do it so well!
Lick, although I'd love to respond, the topic is Freedom of the Press, not the Kurds (who have survived an attempted genocide at the hands of Saddam yet are apparently "stupid" and cannot see Iraqi politics with the same clarity you can from a Brussels eurocrat wasteland).
You raised the Kurds, PB, so dont show yourself more evasive than you already are by trying to suggest anyone else has strayed off topic. And your snide quip about Brussels (as well as intimation of my professional activities) remains as mistaken as just about anything else you waste the forum's time with. Obviously if 17% or less of Russians continue to honour the legacy of Stalin, your logic demands we should invade to reinstate the Soviet Union. More cognitive dissonance from the London pub trawler himself.
