    Story

52% of the 5.1 million voters who voted on this issue on Nov 4th, voted to ban safe sex marriage, this in one of the most liberal states of America.

California has a population roughly of 36 million. 5.1 million voted, if you believe that 5.1 million is representative of the population (which it probably would be).....

Then roughly half of the people in one of the most liberal states in the US voted to ban gay marriage.........which begs the question......WTH is going on??

On the topside, if you just go by that hoohaa regularly drummed up in the media about the "sanctity of marriage" (which no one can define anyway), then why is it an issue any would bother with? Seriously does it make sense to you, most wouldnt know a gay person, the issue has little to do with their lives. Why would they conscoiusly vote Yes to a ban on something that is usually about two people falling in love, making it official?

Think about it for a minute, does this make sense to you?, is it really all about marriage itself

    OR.....

Now, I might sound like a broken record here, but I'm going to say it again....Is the real reason half vote for a ban have to do with stuff people never talk about in public?

Just some suggestions here; nothing concrete, but could it have to do with:

    - Fear of gay spreading, validating gay marriage might mean gay gets more popular somehow

    - Do they not want us parenting children? and they just see marriage as the step before

    - Do they see raising kids as mainly the forum of the female gender. Not that it would ever happen, but I'd be interested to see the difference in a seperate vote to ban male and female same sex marriages. Is it indeed a gay issue or a gender one?

    - Is it in part about the secret bi girl/guy that went the traditional way to have kids, putting up with a laregely plutonic opposite sex relationship for the kids all the while with a secret same sex partner(s) now a bit miffed gay people nowadays (almost ) can have their cake and eat it too

    - More legit gay married couples around, will that undermine some of the secret bi stuff of either gender?

    - Do they want us to remain single?

    Or any other reasons

I voted no on prop. H8TH. I am not suprised that it passed however. There are a number of reason for this. One is the yes on 8 side was will organized. Here is Santa Clarita they were at avery major intersection in the city for weeks before the election. The no on 8 people were MIA. But, one of the main reason for the yes vote I believe was the yes on 8 commercial with Ganin Newsom yelling "If you like it or not!" pissed people off. He came across as a real jurk, and I think a lot of people that had at first though they would vote no, voted yes because of this AH.

If you go east of I-5, California is pretty conservative. There's a definite split.

I think the real shift for Prop 8 was due to the BS advertizing about teaching gay marriage to school children. You don't want someone teaching your kid that being gay isn't sinful, wrong, or weird and you won't go to hell, now would you?

The good news is that the lawsuits have started. I think they have a good chance. How can you legislate bigotry into the constitution?

Personally, I truly can't understand why anybody voted for this or why they feel threatened by gay marriage.

I agree, and Santa Clarita is vary conservative. But the state elected Obama by a good percentage. If I remember correctly he came out against prop. 8. In a state as liberal as California, I believe some of those who voted yes did so for reason other than the idea that homosexuality would be taught in the schools. When this prop. was first qualified it was 3/2 against. Once the commercail with Gavin Newcom came out I noted the yes side started gaining gound quickly. I think he alienated a lot of people that here to for were against prop. 8. I have faith. I believe that homosexual marrage will be allowed sooner are later. I believe the acceptance of homosexuals is the way our society moving.

I don't live in California, but they played some sound bytes and things in this neck of the woods. Personally I don't care what anybody does and of course any change in overall opinion would require activism.
However I tend to think that it wasn't the "rednecks" and things once again shooting things down so much as fence sitters who are turned off not by active proponents but by obnoxious proponents like the mayor of San Francisco. I wouldn't vote for a ban on something like this but if I was someone who hadn't made up my mind about some inititiative or other; listening to someone tell me things are going to happen whether I like it or not it would take a fair bit of convincing for me to shrug off arrogance like that.

Nothing personally against gays, but I'm completely glad. God didn't make humans to have sex with people with the same sex.

Well this is a religious argument, and since we have a separation of Church and State, religion should have nothing to do with our laws.

Why anyone would want to limit anyone else's happiness, for any reason, is beyond me.

    - exactly when religion and law come together it will often cause problems e.g. fights, sepration of co,inities wars etc (depending on the laws and how religios the country is etc)

Well, then you can feel free to marry someone of the opposite gender. No one is proposing to make gay marriage mandatory. Why do you feel the need to interfere in someone else's right to marry? How is it your business?

Your opinions and god have no right to deny me legal rights. The USA is NOT a theocracy.

Some people thought blacks shouldn't be allowed to marry whites.

It also needs to be noted that marriage has 1,138 federal rights. Civil unions only have 300 state rights.

Comparing blacks and gays is utterly stupid. We went through a lot more than gays...all gays want to do is be accepted for being able to have sex with someone of the same sex...we were fighting not to be slaves...not to be killed...and to survive, and we won that battle. I could give a damn if gays want to marry or not, because marriage should not be between same sex couples.
