Can snakes bite through denim and/or regular leather tennis shoes? I only have 2 poisonous snakes in my area copperheads and timber rattlers.

Probably. They will do all they can to get out of your way. Help them by making noise. I've heard of some hikers who wear ankle bells.

Be careful where you put your hands, too. A forum member got bit by a copperhead while she was reaching for a stick.

Watch where you walk and reach. I've encountered 4 or 5 or maybe 6 Eastern Diamondback Rattlers, which can get pretty big, and have never had a problem.

One was hanging from a branch we got stuck under while canoeing. (We backed out as fast as possible while sticking to the bottom of the canoe. I was in the back so I thought it was pretty funny.)

My nephew, who had just finished survival training at the Naval Academy almost stepped on one while backpacking, I had to yell at him and push him aside.

My wife almost stepped on one while hiking, she ran behind me.

Others were laying around here and there. Only one ever rattled his rattle. We just left them alone and continued on.

All of them except the canoe snake were sunning on rocks or trails.

Did I ever tell you about the "Ball O Snakes" we ran across one day?

the good thing bout snakes is they are mostly defensive....if you step near one they will coil and give you time to back up.....but not too much time...the other day i almost stepped on a 6ft copperhead. a couple summers ago i lived in a tent in the blue ridge mountains, copperheads and rattlesnakes were abound. but theyre easy to cope with. unless youre in india with cobras and vipers youll be fine.

Yeah, you gotta be careful. I saw something on TV that was saying how rattlers are beginning to not rattle anymore, because the ones that do are the one's people hear and kill, when they go out to rid an area of snakes. Natural selection at work, folks, and snakes will be all the more dangerous for it.

A bit OT: I like your THINK sig, wonder where you got it from, and if I can use it---(probably mostly on another forum)

This thread reminds me again why I'm lucky to be from Maine. I once hired a few gardeners from southern states who couldn't believe it was OK to just reach benind stones, logs, etc and not have to worry what's there.

I lived in the woods for many years when I was a young child. I remember my closet encounter with being bit was by a Diamondback Rattler. I was taking a rest in a ditch and then looked to my side and there the sucker was. He wasn't rattling or nothing. Needless to say, I hauled some major ass outta there.

But yeah, it was a rare occasion to NOT see a snake. There were always rattlers or other kinds in the road. The nonpoisonus (thanks to animal planet!) I would always pickup and move out of the way or just play with it.

And to answer your question, yes they can easily bite through sneakers or denim jeans. If you ever use boots, get some steel-toe boots, there isn't anyway they can sink their fangs through a layer of steel!
