Can you name all the counties without looking them up? The Americans learn about all 50 states at school ... but we never really learn all that much about Britain, do we? Do you even know how many counties there are in England? In Wales? In Scotland? In Northern Irelans?
I don't even know ... and I think that's my point! Let's see ... in England there are: Avon Bedfordshire Berkshire Buckinghamshire Cambridgeshire Cheshire Cornwall Cumbria Devon Dorset East Sussex Essex Gloucestershire Hampshire Herefordshire Hertfordshire Kent Lancashire Leicestershire Lincolnshire Norfolk Northamptonshire Nottinghamshire Oxfordshire Somerset Staffordshire Suffolk Surrey Warwickshire West Sussex Wiltshire Worcestershire Yorkshire That's 33. But I was sure that there are about 36. Just can't remember what the others are ... I can remember the ones they abolished in the 1970s, though ... Huntingdonshire, Rutland, Westmorland, Cumberland, Northumberland
You know what there's that many in just California, and we still got 49 more states. nvm im too drunk to even attempt this.
That's cheating, you didn't name them all, "Mainland Europe" is no more a country then Asia, or Africa.
The real question is can you name the only county that matters? If you said Yorkshire, tha's spot on. Champion.
Beebs-you didn't mention Tyne & Wear,West Midlands, the Scilly Isles or that beauteous conurbation 'Greater London',which due to having a unitary authority is now considered a county. [I know, babe. But shhh-keep your head down, say nothing]
Why were these scrapped? I honestly wouldn't have any idea if I were put on the spot and asked to name the counties. Is it important do you feel? I think I have a pretty good grasp of UK geography thanks to my love of maps and football! But I guess that's more of a town and city thing.
it's a crying shame they scrapped Middlesex :bigcry: even though there's still a Middlesex County Cricket Club :2thumbsup:
Are the Scilly Isles a separate county? I thought they counted as part of Cornwall, same as the Isle of Wight counts as part of Hampshire, Lindisfarne counts as part of Northumberland (ooooh ... does Northumberland still exist??) and Lundy counts as part of anywhere that'll have it
